Walk the talk - with pictures

Sunday, July 25, 2010

We entered the country's biggest mass walking event...the 702 Walk the Talk...with 55 000 participants, it was certainly busy! There are 4 distance walks - 30k and 15k timed walks for the serious participants, 8ks for the not so serious and 5k fun walk for those with small children and dogs...we did the 5k.

This was a planned family event for us, as well as the first official family exercise outing, and dogs were welcome so we registered everyone back in April and waited a really long time for this day. We've been walking quite a bit to get everyone ready for the walk, particularly the youngest family member (5 yrs) and the oldest (70yrs). Finally the day rolled round and there's not much I can say but share it in pictures. So here goes:

Kelso and me as we arrived, fresh and ready for a big day

Waiting at the start...

Having some fun with the great music they were playing

It took 20 mins to cross the start line...

And then we just enjoyed ourselves...

They were trying to get into the Guiness Book of Records for the largest walking event in the world and they might just get it...this is what we saw for the entire 5k walk...

And finally...the finish, with a medal! Look carefully and you'll see that the dog got one too...

And then, after walking 5ks, as well as another 5k roundtrip to and from the car...we were totally pooped when we realised that we'd walked double the distance we anticipated...you can see the happy-but-tired look right here...

And now the bug has bitten...we're already planning the next event!

You cracked me up on 20 minutes to cross the start line!

The only "big" event I've done (a couple smaller ones like 20 ppl ;p) was the very famous Susan G Komen...well, I ran it in competitive division (only 5K and I came in around 1,730-is -- so don't think that's impressive!) but what was amazing is HOW LONG it took to "start." We didn't even hear the starting shot, we were soooo far back! It wasn't as many people as yours, though but almost. MASSIVE. Large groups scare me, so I've not been back.

I LOVE that your dog & an elder went with you! emoticon

    Great!
Now those walks for the DVDs will just seem like training for the kids - awesome :)

What a fantastic day you had. Thanks so much for sharing the pictures and for the race report. I know, those races are terribly addicting, aren't they? I did my first earlier this month and I have 4 more lined up already. :)

When is your next event? How much "family training" are you going to do? LOL! I think it's great that you're all getting out and getting moving. :)
