Today (08-21-10), after our late PM wogs, Blue started to bleed from his rear end. I'm trying NOT to be too Graphic. I believe from my Research on line that my Vet has lied to me, intentionally or not- ALL dogs have Anal Glands, just FYI. I've been asking for almost a yr. if Blue had issues because of various new problems he's had. No one ever examined it, they just told me "Male" Dog's don't need to have Anal Glands Excreted. That information is wrong! Due to varying possible complications, the male dog can have infections,:etc. in this area. Now Blue is bleeding. From my Research this could be a simple remedy of having him Excreted, or as bad as requiring Surgery! Most of you know he was a Rescue with Heart Worms. Even though he's cured, the damages to his heart are there. Putting him to sleep alone can be dangerous. The Surgery if needed is dangerous alone according to my Research, this could Rupture and kill him too.
Pray for him, please. We can only take him in as soon as Local Vet Offices open in the AM. The nearest Vet ER is horrible and 60 mi. away. So we don't feel we'll gain a good prognosis there and are monitoring him in case the bleeding worsens. At the moment its a slow trickle of bright red, so we know that whatever's happened is a new problem on-going.
I'll update ASAP. Thanks my Spark Friends.
** Part II, "The Vet Visit" (08-22-10)
After finally getting the car bearably cool, poor Blue suffered the indignity of being hoisted into the VW Bug. And road in utmost silent suffering, luckily the trip is only 15-20 mi. We ended up waiting almost an hr. with a room full of anxious dogs and a irresponsible Pet Owner who flounced into the Vet with her Schnauzer off the Leash! The Schnauzer almost became Wiener Schnauzer for the German Shepherd nearest the door. She actually put her hands on her hips, and announced to the Front Desk, "Do you people have any leashes?" Duh? Its a Vet Office! Totally clueless and she made no effort to move her dog who was now standing 'nose 2 nose" growling at the German Shepherd by now! Lucky 4 her the German Shepherd was on a leash unlike HER dog! The room was utter chaos for 10 min. , all the other dogs going crazy with her dog. The German Shepherd like my ER just started to Whine for the rest of his visit. Poor Guy. And Blue Basset actually tried to climb a chair and jump out the nearest window above it during the altercation! Grrh! the Vet Assistant actually had to retrieve a leash for this lady and remove her dog. Some people just don't deserve to have an animal or child in my opinion.
We finally saw a Vet who had Blue cleaned and prepped for examination. I'd left the area alone just so the Vet could see what shape the area was in. He seemed a bit mystified? A small hole on one side of the rear is there. The Vet did excrete him and no infections found. No fever either. Blue's still eating and still wanting his wogs. Bowel and Kidneys seem OK. Blue's prostrate is a little enlarged, but Vet assured me that was Normal for an un-neutered Male of Blue's age. We are to place him on antibiotics due to the opening, which may actually be a Birth Defect, Anal Tear, or an Abscess was there and ruptured. There was another Internal Abscess found leading to that conclusion. Blue also has Pain Med's and I have to get some Baby Wipes into Stock.
Meanwhile, once Blue is cooler, calmer, and settled. We both take a warm bath and a much needed Nap! We follow-up on the condition in 7 days, still a little bleeding happening. And the Abscess that was found, may need to be Surgically removed if it doesn't clear. Wogs are allowed if Blue wants them, so no excuses there for either of us; unless the Heat gets to us too much.
Again, Thank U Spark Friends- so much. The DH had a hard time seeing past the Finances of the Vacation Plans going down the "Vet Drain" to help me in this at all. I'll keep everyone posted. Ttylr
