Hot Wednesday/Eye Exam today

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

The weather really change over the last 24 hours. We are now in a heat wave. cool and cloudy for the couple of months. I wanted summer, yes and now it is here. I am still trying to get up earlier in the morning for walking Phred. Just feel like lazing in bed every morning, even after sleeping 8 or 9 hours.

Had a 2pm eye exam appointment. The car was so hot because it is black. I almost burned my rear end on the sit and I have a shade on the front window. Dr. Berry's office is so close I could walk but it was just too hot. He always does the full exam and dilates your eyes. I didn't want to walk home after that because I always get just a bit of a head ache from the drops. I should be getting my new glass in about 7 days.

I have been on steroids (prenidsone) for close to 25 yrs now with a only a few times being off of it 89' for 6 months and from spring of '08 - spring 09'. The problem with long term steroid use is that they can cause side effects, some bad. The last time I had an exam 2 yrs ago Dr.B noticed some cataracts in one eye, not bad, nothing too worry about. Now he says I have some small cataracts in both eyes but they are not causing me problems yet. That is not what I want to hear because I know it is only a matter of time. He says it is age but I know that at 54 I could start to bet cataracts but not very common. Mostly you get it when you get a bit older. Of course the only good thing is if it get bad enough I can have surgery and get my eyes corrected so I wouldn't have to wear glasses at all. (This is what happen to my ex husband and the surgery corrected his eye site and he no longer had to wear glasses or contacts.) Oh well I am sort of stuck taking the prenidsone because I have tried some of the other drugs with ill effects. I am also currently taking Celcept and have no idea if this drug can cause this problem. I will have to check the internet and see.

Have a nice tomorrow everyone. Will take a picture in my new glasses once I get them. emoticon

After my mother had cataract surgery she only had to wear reading glasses after years and years of glasses. I was told on exams over the past 5 years that I have very small cataracts also but not a problem yet either. The first opthamologist told me we actually start developing cataracts frequently in our late 20's but are so small we don't notice them for many years. I was very surprised to hear that.

Take care of your eyes - they are too valuable to risk. I am sorry that you need to be on long term medication - that must be tough on your body. It has been very very hot here in DC. Hottest June on record and July has been just as hot. We have had a few recent rainy cooler days but today is right back up there in heat. I will be wishing it was hot come January so I will enjoy it while it is here. Take care and cool!

I enjoy my contacts- but actually like wearing glasses too. They have so many fun and cute options now. Wearing glasses is cool- not like 20 years ago when you were a dork if you wore them :) Can't wait to see your pics!
