Not the Vacation I Had Planned...

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

As some of you know, I was on vacation in NH with my family last week. It was to be a time of visiting many family members. It started out wonderfully. We had a great time at my uncle's house on July 4th. There were probably about 50 people there. Some I hadn't seen in years. Great start to the week.

Monday I spent several hours on the beach. I really enjoyed seeing my grandsons enjoy their first experience there. They truly enjoyed it. When I got back to the cottage, I wasn't feeling well and decided to lie down for awhile. After a short rest things got better. Later that night, I started to feel bad again. I didn't know what was wrong...I just didn't feel right. It was at that time that i started to have a bad headache, jaw pain, and back pain around the shoulders. It was at this point that we called 911. I'm sure those of you who recognize the symptoms know that I was having a heart attack. I had several incidents in the next few hours. They did a heart cath and found no blocked arteries. What they found was what is called the "broken heart" syndrome. The top part of my heart works fine compressing and expanding, but the bottom part only balloons out. It's treatable with medications and cardiac rehab. I spent 4 days in the hospital there away from home. It was a scary situation. I have already started medication. I have an appointment with a cardiologist and will find out what is the next step in my treatment.

I am writing this blog to advise everyone to know the various signs of a heart attack for both men and women. They are different. My husband knew and got me taken care of quickly. I am truly thankful for his quick actions. Without them, it might have been worse. I'm not sure how active I will be on Spark during this time, but I will try to check in regularly. My energy level is low right now and I am not spending a lot of time on line. Hope to back in full swing soon. I will try to answer any e-mails or comments when I can.

OMG. Nancy. I'm so sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I'm so relieved that you recognized this right away. It's the first hour that is critical. My DH had a silent heart attack, and by the time he went to the doctor's...a few months later... the entire front of his heart was scar tissue and he had only 25 % function of the heart. They put him on meds and cardio rehab, and put in a pace-maker/defibrillator. He's doing great now.

Lots of love,

While I wouldn't want to spend my vacation in the hospital you were lucky that you were with caring family and that you got to the hospital in rime.

But don't give up the fight to lose weight. You will need to monitor your foods and get that weight down now more than ever unless you want to have that experience all over again.

Hang in there. Spark's here for you.
