Yesterday I responded to a question about gear for backcountry kayaking. That got me thinking about the pack that I used to carry in my 20s when doing long distance mountain hikes. A full pack was 47 pounds--the heaviest that I could carry and still be able to climb mountains. I also trained in fitness classes for the entire winter to be in shape for the treks.
Now consider the weight that I'm working at loosing (slowly). I've already lost 30 lb (some before spark). I have 23 lb more to loose to be at the weight I was on those hikes. That is more than the heaviest pack that I ever carried. I have a very clear memory of how good it used to feel taking that pack off. I felt like I was floating after it came off. It is a great reminder of the strain the extra weight puts on my body. Think of how much more energy I will have!
