Warning: Sugar-Free Candy... Laxative?

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

I got some sugar-free candy from Dollar Tree and ate it today. I have been running to the bathroom for hours now - and my stomach feels (and sounds) like there is an alien in there. After wondering what could have done this, I remembered that after I had eaten the candy and I had read the back of the package, it said "Warning: May have a laxative effect"

I don't know if this is true of ALL sugar-free candy, or just the Landmark Confections Peppermint Patties that I ate today - but I've never had something like this happen to me. I ate a serving size. It's not as if I ate the whole bag of them. But my stomach has been going crazy for hours now.

I had originally bought 2 bags of candy, but after this, the rest is going in the trash!

Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

I know that warning is on sugar free red vines too. Personally I don't like those anyway, but hubby heeded the warning and ate only a couple at a time. Sometimes the chemicals and replacements are worse for us than the sugar - at least I KNOW what sugar does to me.
Hang in there

Thanks for the warning. I will keep a watch out to avoid that problem.

This happens with a lot of sugar free products, you have to be very careful about what ingredients are replacing the sugar. Look on the ingredients list it probably has sugar alcohol...i try to avoid any products that contain this ingredient because it can really mess up your stomach!!

It's the sugar alcohols in them that give them a laxative effect. And MANY sugar-free candies (especially those with chocolate in them) have the sugar alcohols. But honestly, it's better tasting than ExLax, eh? I guess it would be quite a surprise if you're not expecting it though. I think it also has to do with how many you eat at a time - spacing them out may keep you out of the bathroom.

I haven't personally, but some girls I work with learned their lesson the hard way. :)
