I have a plan

I've written a few times that I'd like to run 5 miles on my 40th birthday - Aug 27th. After running races the past couple of weekends I thought it wasn't going to happen. Bonnie thought all I needed was a training schedule - I thought she was crazy.

I googled 5 mile training programs and found one right away. I don't remember the site (I copied the chart into Word) but it was a Novice to 8K, 8 week program. What I like about it - running only 3 days a week, cross training 2. Days scheduled off - Monday and Friday (who wouldn't like that!). I'm only doing 2 miles for T, H for about 3 weeks. Heck, on Thursdays I never go above 2 miles and Tuesdays never above 3.

I thought about it and realized I would have run the same distance every day - trying for 3 miles from the get go and then adding some on maybe once a week until I hit 5. While I know that for marathons long runs come once a week, I would have not worked as well as this plan lays out.

We'll see where it goes. I think I found a 2 mile route with a lot of side streets that should be relatively flat. I need to do the Spark Map My Route one more time because when I was driving by the one street today, I'm not sure it connects like I had thought. Good thing about where I live - a lot of parallel streets so if one doesn't work - the next one probably does.

This is the first time I've had a plan in this journey. Planning is not something I really enjoy - maybe it's commitment issues :) Let's hope it gets me to where I want to go.

    Wonderful. I'm sure you're going to do great with this. This plan sounds perfectly reasonable and manageable. Good luck training. If you're able to run 2-3 miles now, I have every confidence that you'll be able to run 5 miles by the end of August. Concentrate on a slower, maintainable pace and perhaps consider jazzing up your music to keep you motivated (I won't lie, when I'm running I need the most craptastic music out there to keep me pushing forward--but me and Britney Spears can kick it out for MILES more than I can do alone!).

I'm so sad that I can't run outside because of the heat & humidity:(
