Site Improvements for People with Diabetes

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Hi everyone

We are excited to launch our first round of improvements to the site for people with diabetes (types 1 and 2) and pre-diabetes. We know that diabetes is on the rise nationwide, and we have received many, many requests for these improvements. We plan to launch more enhancements later this year, but for now the new features for people with diabetes include:

1) An enhanced glucose tracker, where you can now specify the time of day you tracked your blood sugar (pre-breakfast, post-lunch, etc). This tracker is on your Weigh-In page (and also at the top of your Nutrition Tracker page.

2) Improvements to your Nutrition Tracker, including carbohydrate and calorie goals for every meal and the ability to track glucose directly from the top of the page.

3) Easier to access tools for people with diabetes. This includes:

- New links from your Start page if you are in our diabetes management program

- A new page summarizing all our content and resources for people with diabetes

- A new page to make it easy to change your settings to tell us if you have Type 2, Type 1, or pre-diabetes (or take yourself out of the program)

In addition to these changes just launched, we will be launching more new features later in 2010. The biggest will be meal plans customized for people with diabetes.

To access this program:

- If you had previously told us you have diabetes during your account set-up, you are automatically in this program. You'll find a link to these features from your Start page and your Nutrition Tracker.

- To change (or check) your settings to use this program you can visit www.sparkpeople.com/resource/diabetes-diet-settings.asp.

Finally, if you have any feedback on the program, please reply to this topic in our Managing Diabetes SparkTeam: www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_messageboard_thread.asp?board=0x629x35098942.

We hope that these new features will make SparkPeople even easier and more beneficial for people who have diabetes. If you know of anyone else who might benefit from our free tools and this new Diabetes Management Program, please share this link with them. Thanks!

Would really love to have an Enhanced Nutrition Tracker for NON-diabetics, my diabetic girlfriend uses the enhanced tracker for individual meal goals, its an excellent feature.

I tried setting myself to pre-diabetic which gave me the individual meal goals that I wanted but it wont let me change certain goals like protein & fats etc that I would like it to do.

Any chance of getting this enhanced tracker for everyone??

So far I'm sorta dissappointed. I have to do low carb, but I'd still like to use the glucose tracker but I had to turn off the diabetes thing altogether since I can't use the dietary tracker that you've designed for diabetics.

this isn't reasonable since low carb is recommended for obese diabetics.

I just want to say thank you Sparkguy and the community. I've joined several online weight loss site, but found this to me the most productive and beneficial to me. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and this site has literally inspired me to love myself, right where I am, but to add a spark or two, or maybe even three to keep me motivated and stay focus on the big picture. I've encouraged several friends to joined the site. It has been a great support for me regarding my meals and very informative regarding my type 2 diabetes. I have literally came out of my shell and challenged myself to do better everyday. Most importantly, if I get hungry, I eat healthy snacks like a boiled egg, a piece of fruit, or a piece of protein ( just a small piece with veggies).

I am SO happy to hear that there will be the meal plans for pre-diabetes on the nutrition page! I can't wait! I am not a great cook and I live alone and cooking for one person with pre-diabetes hasn't been great.

I am REALLY looking forward to all the changes and THANKS!

I have loved sparkpeople and it has been invaluable to me. However, I was so annoyed reading this blog this morning. When signed up for sparkpeople, I had to agree to the terms of use starting it was NOT for people w/ type 1 diabetes, yet I get an email about this blog FOR people with diabetes. Either you want to help us or you want to legally cover your ass. Which is it? If I knew where to complaint I would. I've recommended this site to many friends with type 1, but... I added your type 1 nutrition tracker today, and it was totally useless. Basically, it broke down all the calories equally by meal. So, apparently if I have Type 1, I have to eat exactly the same amount at each meal and snack?? What if I have too much morning insulin resistance for so many carbs at breakfast? What is I use carb counting for my insulin? I hope someone contacts me so I can explain my concerns!

THANK YOU so much for these additional features. I had been using MyPlate D on LIVESTRONG previously, and it had nowhere near the community I have found on SparkPeople. I love it here! Thank you, thank you, thank you. You've made me healthier already. emoticon

As a Type 1 person, this Diabetes-specific feature is welcome. While there are many people with Type 2, since only 10% of people are Type 1 there are far fewer apps and resources for us.

After 40 years' controlling Type 1, keeping informed and staying on top of diet, nutrition, blood glucose levels, and general health is something I do daily. Thanks for this welcome addition to my tool kit, along with my blood glucose meter, my SP Nutrition Tracker has become invaluable and in daily use.

A side request to pass along to the correct Spark staff, more health or Diabetes-specific Emoticons would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Warm regards,
John

Thank you so much. I have been a type two well-managed diabetic for almost 20 years and this is making things so much easier for me. The most important aspect is the ability to track the carbs.

This is great. Now can you please make a food plan for vegans? I really don't like being on my own for meal planning. And I know there are a lot of vegans on the site too! emoticon

I just switched over to the Diabetic Tracking...This is really great and I think this is going to help me more. I am in control: A1C Score is 6.1, but I couldn't say that last March 1st it was 8.4. A new Dr., a new me! What a change thanks to the diabetic specialist I found... Your program helps to make my tracking a bit easier and more accurate. SparkPeople is a blessing!

I am for one glad to have the ability to work with what MIGHT be a problem in the future. I have a family predisposition for Adult onset type insulin dependent diabetes (Type 2 for my grandfather and my grandmother was diagnosed as brittle type 1 both have died due to complications of BOTH diseases), and I am afraid I will need the kind of information and support later if I do go the same way they did....

Yes, both are different, Yes things will be improved here! It has been greatly improved since the first time I tried the site (I just came back to Sparkpeople to get my weight and lifestyle back on track!)

Thanbk you for giving me and others a tool we can use and help shape and make better!

Either way, this will be a big help!

I LOVE this!!! I mean love it! It has been so hard for me to track calories and carbs!! I was getting all confused! I know that it is sad to say that! But I started using the tracker and was trying to stay with in that range, and not losing any weight! Cuz I started eating to many carbs again!!! I love the new improvements, on wish I found it sooner!!!

This is an amazing feature. I do not have diabetes but as a nurse in a dialysis unit I will definitely recommend it to my patients.
