Eating healthy and staying properly hydrated while traveling is quite the challenge. I planned extensively for last week’s trip and packed plenty of healthy snacks, but I did not stay on track as much as I had hoped. Still, I feel it was far from failure and I had a wonderful time, so I am considering it a good trip.
I did keep up with the C25K running program. I ran all three days of week 4 and I really enjoyed the change of scenery offered by running city streets as opposed to my usual rural surroundings. I was not able to keep up with my strength and toning, but I walked a lot and went swimming a few days.
Most days of my trip I did take in more than my daily caloric allowance. I accepted that because when travelling I do enjoy eating the local treats and specialties. One day lunch consisted of a thick, decadent slice of cheesecake topped with glazed fruit. My diet while travelling consisted of whole, fresh foods, so I feel the calories were well spent.
It is empowering to be able to stray from my usual routines and dietary habits and regain my footing when the trip ends. I have had to “begin again” a few times due to the usual life-occurrences and I am always grateful to return to my healthy habits. By the end of this trip, I was happy to be back to my usual routine, but it was a wonderful break from the ordinary.
