My Body Is Failing Me

Monday, June 28, 2010

Okay, I am finally admitting defeat. This sciatica won't go away. I've tried heat, Chinese herbal patches, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants. The combination of drugs helps, but leaves me a zombie who can barely get out of bed. That means I don't exercise and ultimately gain weight.

This past weekend, I worked thru the pain and really feel it this morning.

So, it's time to try something new.

This is summer. The time of year when I'm most active and want to be outside enjoying myself. I can't let my body betray me.

So, I'm looking for an accupuncturist to see if that can help. I need something and it's clear traditional drug therapy is not the answer. I'm too young to be completely side-lined.

I'll be curious to see how it goes. I have been meaning to make an appointment for months and just haven't gotten around to it. I think it might complement by once a week massage therapy, chiropractic visits. I usually end up in physical therapy every couple of years.

    Good Luck!

Hey Carrie, you didn't mention stretching and physical therapy...?

I had the piriformis variety of sciatica and I have been SO PLEASED with the results I get from taking every opportunity I can to stretch and follow the moves recommended by my physical therapy group. Pelvic tilt was THE most helpful single move. Kegels, hamstring stretches and others are part of my routine also.

Hate to think of you being grounded by pain...been there, done that and YEOUCH not only the pain, but the frustration and disappointment in one's body not cooperating with one's SPIRIT!

GL in your pursuits for relief!

    Don

ps...when this pain first kicked in a graduatingly smaller dose of Medrol steroid did wonders for me as I learned the stretching moves.

I always had better success with ice on my back for my sciatica than with heat... also stretching... think bicycle crunch position, but pull your left knee across your body towards your right shoulder (and vice versa). That really helped too! Everyone has their own things that worked for them... Hope you find something that works for YOU!

Carrie, good luck with whatever you decide to do. I didn't have much luck with a chiroprator, and it's a little too soon to see if this pain management Dr. is going to work----but I've heard really good things about acupunture; so sure hope that's the right answer for you emoticon
