Why Sparkpeople Works

Thursday, June 24, 2010

To be successful on your journey to become slimmer, you need to really dig deep and figure out if you REALLY want to make a change in you lifestyle. Programs like Weight Watchers are ok but I would say the majority of people loose weight and gain it back. I myself did Jenny Craig, Ankins Low Carb along with countless other diets that all failed. I lost 80 pounds. I sat through all the classes. Yes I learned what I was supposed to do too. Unless that concept of a Lifestyle change clicks in you head you WILL gain back all the weight you loose. It isn't just about the weight. It is also complex reasons that put the weight on you to begin with. When you get the "Spark" you will feel so excited that you will want to eat healthy and exercise. Feel free to sparkmail me any time. Lorraine

So true!! Sometimes this reality hurts though, especially when you want to help your family and friends get fit and be healthy. But, it has to come from within.

    Heartily second ALL those thoughts!

Unlike myself, who learned the hard way that weight loss surgery is not magic, you have REALLY worked with your surgery and made the most of the wind it put in your sails!

I'm so pleased that I managed, despite having to do it the hard way, to claw back from all the weight I REGAINED after my weight loss surgery years ago. Could never have come this far without the OUTSTANDING SUPPORT of my SparkFamily!

.many thx for the honor of your "add"! :-)

Yep. My understanding is that it's much like quitting smoking -- you can wear the patch, etc. but unless it's something you're committed to, you're one whiff of cigarette smoke away from going back.

Same here. Be committed fully, in your head, and a whiff of baked goods becomes something to enjoy as much as a whiff of a rose. And just as edible.

I add that "diets" in general do not work because the focus is on what you cannot have. Restriction of favorite foods will ultimately lead to "cheat days" and the slide will continue because the emotional side of the equation smacks the dieter in the face. One of the traits of a healthy lifestyle is portion control. Here we remind ourselves that one is not the same as the other. For instance one package of cookies is not the same a one cookie; but, cookies are not forbidden. So, have your cookie (one or two please), count them and be happy!

I think the most important thing is to live a healthy lifestyle, not diet. I make better choices now as to what to eat. I choose to walk or ride my bike instead of watching TV or snacking. It has to become a habit, instead of a diet mentality. People on diets look forward to when they get off the diet. With a healthy lifestyle mentality is just choosing healthy foods that you like.

Sometimes the "real" reason for all the weight we carry is very difficult to figure out......

    Kudos Lorraine
I cut out all my drinks but water and tea and a rare hot chocolate, that was a big lifestyle change for me, and portion control

For sure - the key is 'lifestyle' - not diet! It's reality, not perfection - It's life - not purgatory!

Thanks for saying it so well!
