Seasonal eating!

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Since I began my weight loss journey I have changed my eating habits considerably. I now love to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. I now go to my local Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings after my walk. I now love to eat seasonally.

I like to enjoy eating what is actually growing currently! It gives me great enjoyment to eat fresh asparagus in the first days of spring. Fresh new lettuces grown locally are a new love. I am now enjoying blueberries. Yummm! I loved discovering pomegranates last fall and I can't wait till they are in season again.

It is also a lot more economical to follow the seasons and eat what is currently growing. There are a lot of websites that will tell you what is in season if you need help. Try it!

Farmer's markets are the best. Last week I was told that I got the last of the bing cherries for the season and I will miss them. I'm looking forward to the artichokes though. Yum

I used to be able to get fresh fruit from family on the farm but they are not growing as much since they got older but now I have to turn to the farmes markets. Love it.

Think globally, act locally. That's what you're doing by eating seasonally and from the Farmer's Market.

Through SparkPeople, I, too, now love the taste and smell of the fresh veggies and fruit and I'm eating more of them.

Good for you. Keep it up.

Lynne

Great way to think about food and nutrition not to mention the budget. I wish I lived in an area more conducive to year round local produce. I always get so jealous when I visit my daughter in CA and can eat so much more healthfully from local food. At least that is easier to do here in the north during summer months.

Fortunately for us, our primary produce grocery store has a buy-local program, since the only farmer's market we get here seems to specialize in breads and baked goods, wines, and pillows and crafts! I rarely stop because there is rarely anything I want to buy. There is one vegetable stand that I frequent in the late summer for zucchini and summer squash and fresh beans, but all in all I do better at Hannaford.

That is a wonderful new habit! I love the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables during their season. And you are right, they are much more economical...and they actually last longer than their hothouse friends.

What a great new habit you have formed. It's great to support your local growers as well.
