Mothers Little Helper

Now Iím not talking about those little yellow pills that Mick Jagger wails about that will help Motherís get through the day. No, Iím talking about those little pills that weíre all supposed to take while weíre depriving our body of food but still trying to get our daily allowance of nutrients - VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS.



Multi-vitamins with calcium, multi-vitamins with iron, fat burners, fat blockers, energy boosters, appetite suppressants, yada yada yada. Donít even get me started on the others that sound just down right disgusting: Detoxifiers, Body Flushers, Colon Cleanser Ė EEEWWWEEE!!!

Anyway, whatís a newbie Sparker to do? I know I need to start with a multi but what difference does it make what kind of multi it is or whether or not I get at Costco or Trader Joes or the Vitamin Shoppp? What is rubbish and what is legit.

Besides cost and quantity, what's the difference? With hubby and I on a really tight budget these days, I need to be really conscious of what I'm spending but I do want to do what I have to get healthy again

Any suggestions fellow Sparkers? Inquiring minds want to know.

    FRENCHTOSD - Thx for the tips and suggestions; I really appreciate it. I hear that the vitamin E and fish oil are great for sore achy muscles (got plenty of those). It probably wouldn't hurt to get them. I'll also check out the nutrition boards for all the advice I will probably ever need.

    I go with the multi-vitamin (for seniors!) and also take additional Vit E and Fish Oil. Hopefully, I'm getting everything I need, but I don't really know. I think there are some spark articles about it. You could also ask on the Nutrition Message Board. I'm sure you will get an earful of advice there.

    roseredd58 - thx for the info; I appreciate it. I strongly suspected that other than cost and quantity, there wasn't much difference between Costco vitamins and those at Trader Joes or the Vitamin Shoppe.

    I know I need a multi and so that is where I will start. Don't know much about asorption rate; I guess that has to do with how our bodies asorb the vitamins and nutrients we take in.

    I never realized how many suppliments there were until I had my gastric bypass. On the advice of my surgeon, I take a multivite. He said read the labels, but they're pretty much equal as far as brand names vs storebrands. Most of my sups come from Sam's Club. I also take sups by bloodwork results. This is because of my surgery, my absorption isn't the same. So my opinion is ask your doc. If I have questions, I call the office, ask for the "nurse's line", and relay my question. This way either the nurse will call me back or if the answer is detailed the doc will call. Don't be afraid to ask. I'm a Medical Assistant and I still ask questions about everything. Good Luck!Tammy
