Grocery Shopping

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

I shop at the commissary at the base which I know is a great priviledge but let me tell you about it. People there are just plain rude. I absolutely HATE going there. The aisles are small and people cram their buggies bumper to bumper in there and they will just as soon run you over as look at you. It is so hard to navagate through the aisles yet alone with assasin buggy drivers waiting to kill you at every turn. Heaven forbid if you were to stop to look at something: people would be on you pinning you in so you can NEVER escape from your prison. Yet I continue to go there week after week trying to smile and make a difference. I actually got a smile back from a lady last week: a great beginning. I am going to count this as a mission! I refuse to let these morons reduce me into a buggy pushing crazy person. I am going to carry myself with dignity and smile and let others go first and be a light for God in an otherwise very dark grocery store!!

HEY--- I'm one of those "crazies" who uses an electric scooter. emoticon But, I am very careful -- many times I stop and wait when I see people not paying attention to where they are going - those with cell phones growing out of their ears- . I'll see someone quite a ways away from me I swear is heading for me on purpose -- of course I stop and SMILE right at them. I smile at everyone - you'd be surprised how many smiles I get back. Even some looking grouchy cheered up. Sometimes, I get a little chuckle out of someone who looks so grouchy and I smile and smile and they don't smile back and I think HAH I had fun heckling them. emoticon Actually I find people looking for the same things as I and we have a nice conversation, plus they always ask if they can reach something for me. Makes me feel good. Many times I have to ask someone for help in reaching higher shelves and always get nice help and smiles. I just get so physically tired going to store. And getting in an out of the car -- and walking across parking lots is about the extent of my abilities -- but it is good exercise. Groan emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Sarah, that's great. My experience of the grocery store is quite different - it's kind of a social gathering place. I think that's a good thing and maybe you're just the person to change the direction at the PX.

Blessings today

Keep on smiling we never know what that person has been thru today or yesterday. A smile is a curve that straightens out alot of things in life! I want to let my light shine no matter how people treat me if i don't treat them right that brings me down to their level! Have a good day!!!! emoticon

Good for you! I was in the grocery store last Sunday and an older women was behind me with a couple of items, while I had a full basket that I had already unloaded. My first (very rude) thought was - "Why don't you go the express line?". Instead - I realized that it would take so little to make another person happy, and I offered to let her go in front of me. She seemed so surprised and happy that it improved both of our moods. Keep smiling! emoticon

Smiling at people in the grocery store is about the only way I can keep my sanity! Honestly!!! It's really strange that I don't remember the commissary shopping being bad until I lived in Hawaii & used to go to the one in Schofield Barracks. One-Way aisles with no passing room and, yup, you'd better have your list in order and keep moving! Perhaps it bothered me there because life in general was slow and easy... not the Army way... *LOL*

I was reading an article yesterday that mentioned making yourself notice the eye color of the people you meet. It's not a test, and you don't have to necessarily speak to them, but if you're noticing their eyes you are making eye contact with them! Pretty cool, I thought.

Keep smiling, my friend!

Gentle hugs,

I'm not sure why people have to be this way. I'm sure there's a chain reaction of bad attitudes going on.

Bravo to you for trying to make a change! I'm sure the people who work there will be happy to see you.

This happens everywhere now...doesn't really matter what store you are in. My matra is to be friendly and smiling to everyone no matter what I have to deal with (doesn't always happen of course) but when you do that, you begin to see others like you and you spread God's smile, warmth, love and acceptance. Sounds like that is what you are trying to do too! Good for you:)

Good for you! Being a light for God is always the answer to all of lifes' griefs. The grocery store is also a nightmare for me, on the most part. People see me on a cart and think that I am just an overweight lady to lazy to walk in the store. Of course, there are a few nice people, but people do act like you are in just in their way. I am proud that you have such a wonderful Christian attitude.

I loved your blog and I understand. Believe me it's not just commissary that the people are rude and mean. I shop at Winco and WalMart holy cow those idiots are down right nasty. You can't say excuse me to go pass them cause they don't acknowledge
that you spoke to them so all you do is hit their baskets and move forward.

Shopping is my least favorite thing to do

Good luck in your shopping today

When did people forget how to smile and be polite? I find myself avoiding eye contact with people, because if you smile they look at you like you're out of your mind. I'm going to borrow your attitude and smile at them anyway! Maybe we can get a "pay it forward" with a smile going!
