Survival Mode

This past 30 days has been a blur (our son's high school graduation, daughter's wedding, house guests for three weeks, traveling, camping, farming)



and as a result I have completely dropped off of Sparkpeople. Thank goodness that the things I have learned have helped me stay on track. No weight gained amid all the chaos, thank goodness. I did not accomplish my goal of weighing in at 129 for our daughter's wedding



but I am happy to report that I have not gained weight either even though life has been too crazy to log in these past days. Here is what I have been trying to do while traveling and enjoying all the parties and the food:)

• Eat while sitting down at the table and not allowing myself to read, watch TV, or drive while I am eating. This is a huge thing for me as I have spent most of my life eating wile reading, watching TV, or driving and it made me fat. Carving out new neural pathways is hard and takes time for people like me but it can be done. I hope…

• Focus on the food and really enjoy it when I am eating. This is easier to do now that I am not distracted by a book, the TV, or cars on the road.

• Eat slow. This is also hard for me as those who know me will attest that I live life in the fast lane. I always figured I could slow down when I am dead but perhaps there is some value to it in the here and now.

• Stop eating when I am satisfied. Eating slow helps in this area as my brain has time to check in with the empty/full register in my stomach.

• Exercise 5 times a week. Since we moved I have had a difficult time with this. The gym is 25 minutes away. It is kind of dangerous to run on the country roads near my house. I will find a solution to this somehow. I have to run. It clears my head and pumps me with endorphins. I just won’t give it up.

Now that things are somewhat "normal" at home I hope to lose the remaining 6 pounds before our trip to Hawaii where I will again be tested and tried to maintain the goal.

My sister-in-law, Pauline,



is a great role model. When she arrived from Hawaii and I saw her I was shocked at how skinney she still was after all these years (she's 51 and will kill me for posting this). We spent 3 weeks together and you can bet I was taking notes every time she ate. She dropped a few pounds below her normal range before her vacation in anticipation of all the fun and food. She eats what she wants but is not fat. She enjoys her food. She doesn't eat if she is not hungry. Someday maybe that will come easy for me.

In the mean time, I need Sparkpeople, support, books, emails, and motivators to eat right. Thanks everyone for all your posts and encouragement. I will try my best to log in every day until the next trip.

    You look absolutely gorgeous in that picture! You have great taste and it looks like a very distinguished husband, as well.

emoticon back! I missed you. And emoticon on the graduation and the wedding! I honestly don't know how you took a care of guests for three weeks with everything else you have to do.

Clearly, you have been giving a great deal of thought to your eating habits and have converted them into actions. Maintaining your weight during all that chaos cannot have been easy. I know you won't have any trouble losing the last few pounds.

Hawaii is so beautiful! My favorite island is Kuai, the Garden Isle. Take lots of pix and share!

    You may not have met your goal of 129 but may I say you look beautiful just the same. Great Job.
