Give Yourself a WooHoo
Tuesday, June 08, 2010
I've had a couple of SparkFriends who've written recently about needing to be better at recognizing their own accomplishments (you know who you are!). Isn't this something we all struggle with sometimes?
An acquaintance was telling me about earning her Master's degree. She worked full-time, but faithfully attended night school year after year until she finally had all the credits she needed to earn that degree. I was sincerely impressed. I told her how much I admired her perseverance and determination, and left feeling I'd met a person with special qualities.
HOURS later it hit me. I did the exact same thing.
Full-time work and night school.
Except I did it while working as the only female in the group during an era when women were barely accepted in the industry.
And I was a single parent.
It can be so easy to take our own accomplishments for granted, whether it is finishing graduate school or finishing a walk in a new record time. One of the things I'm learning here is to make a practice of celebrating the successes of my life. It doesn't matter that other people have lost more weight, or can run further, or are more diligent in staying within their calorie range. What matters is that I'M accomplishing new things every day. I know because I'm LOOKING for those accomplishments.
So give yourself a "WooHoo!". The fact that you're showing up on SparkPeople says you're someone who is looking to accomplish something in your life. And there are a lot of us here who will be celebrating right alongside you.
