What an Awesome Weekend! (But I Was BAD.)

Monday, June 07, 2010

Saturday we had a day without rain (during the daytime) and actual SUNSHINE for the first time since May 15!

I finished planting my front porch containers FINALLY! I was going to take a picture for you today but...IT WAS RAINING!

Picture added 06/07/10:

Also gave a serious haircut to the 'Fragrant Sarcococca' planted next to my front door. They look a little uneven now, but there's new growth at the bottom. I trimmed away the lower parts and put in 'Golden Club Moss', and also added 4" new potting soil and watered them in well with 'fish sauce' - lol! I also made that wreath last year - I'm such a freaking Martha.

We had a lovely dinner of corn, grass, bugs, and cow, cooked on the grill, and we dined al fresco.

Yes, there were leftovers! :)

Today we were back to RAIN. My sweetheart and I went to see "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" at the Living Room Theatres in downtown Portland. COOL place.

I'd read the book and really enjoyed it, and the movie did not disappoint. He asked me before we went if I minded seeing a movie with subtitles.

I said, "No, eye reed purty gud now."

Afterward, we walked about five blocks only to find that the destination restaurant was closed for vacation - ha! So we went to Jake's, instead:

Oh. My. Dog.

I'm from Seattle, but it's been a LONG-ass time since I had a leisurely afternoon seafood dinner that was so perfectly delightful. I had steamed clams - I can't even remember the last time I had them. I had a TOTAL clam-gasm! (DH said that sounded like a lesbian thing, but he was totally cool with it. But let me not digress into his fantasies...) He doesn't like clams as much as he likes mussels, so we always get mussels, and I don't eat them. (He felt bad when I told him that tonight - I just never brought it up. I said, you know, I'll bet if we asked, any seafood restaurant would do half and half for us! We'll do that in the future.)

Guess what? Jeebus wanted me to have a clam-gasm AND a happy husband, because the waitress hosed the order and brought us steamed mussels! So he got the mussels, she comped them, and I got CLAMMAGE! Woot!!!!

Now for the part where I was bad - I ordered the bay scallop and rock shrimp fettucine. I have been jonesing for it for weeks. I'm actually not a real fan of pasta, but it has really sounded yummy. It was amazing.

We had an awesome time, lots of laughs.

Somehow I mentioned to the waitress that my daughter was 31, and she said, "I'm 31! You could be my mother! You don't look old enough to be my mother!"

I said, "Thank you - but it's dark in here. You should see me laying down, it's even more amazing! And if you bring us the wine we just ordered, you just MIGHT!"

So, despite all my recent grousing about the weather, I adore Portland, I have a wonderful husband and a happy life, and I will be marching around like a maniac tomorrow recovering from the calories from today. I might even take the dogs with me - even that counter-surfing wanker named Parker who shredded Kleenex from two garbage cans while we were out today.

Look - look into the face of EVIL ... if you DARE....

    Lovely porch!

I don't think I have ever eaten corn on the cob--I know I'm an oddity (maybe a good addition for Portland?)

Oddly enough, it is the mussels which are more mussel-gasm for us, and make everyone stupidly grin when someone says "I like mussels/j'aime les moules." Clams don't even make us bat an eyelid.

I haven't heard of the movie you mentioned (nor of the book! I am not one of the 7 million who read it)... we're always months late anyway, with subtitles or not! But I can't wait to see the lastest Shrek! (somehow my cultural references fail to come up to expectations! :p )

Sending some tissue to Parker, the Kleenex icon!

Your house and landscaping look amazing, the Martha Stuart word would be "perfect." Yep, it looks that way too!
The stuff on the grill looks delicious. I told my Mom when I was in high school, she served canned asparagus-she calls it a-spare-a-goose, that it made your breath smell like cow's breath. She never forgot that one, and would not serve it if we were going anywhere, lol.
You and your husband sound like Rodger and me. I told him if I believed in reincarnation that I was sure he would come back to Earth as a mule because he was so stubborn and his comeback was, "Well, then you would be a hemmoroid." I told him I would ask God to put me on that mule's trumpet, errrr, you know what I mean.
Parker, the face of evil? LOL!

Parker is pissed because he has poofter hair! Give him a manly cut and you will see that he will stop tearing up your $hit when you're out. Maybe a Mohawk and a studded collar? And dye his lily white Mohawk green or red. Don't forget to let him look in the mirror so he KNOWS how fierce he looks.

I am LMAO at your blog! The talk bubble above Parker's head could read..."Who me?" Looks like an angel to me! It has been years since we have been back to Oregon. We used to go to Rose's Deli? Not sure of the name anymore....everything there came in a gigantic size!

We had the same grilled veg this weekend, but with burgers (with cheese) YUM! I love the leftover corn in a chopped salad.
I keep meaning to get that book and the rest in the series, but just need to get through some others first. Have heard they are a really good read.

Rooby--You are such a joyous woman! I love the way you talk about your life and the events and people in it! This one made me laugh out loud, especially the part about the lesbian word you coined and your DH response to it. But every part was about flat-out LIVING and I loved it! Thanks for sharing your unique perspective! I'm hooked on your blogs!

Have a wonderful day!! You made mine!

HaHa - You always make me laugh! I have 'TGWTDT' and the 2nd book (don't know the name) at home in Ireland to read cos they were too heavy to take back over here and I was given them by my friend who says that they're brilliant. I'm dying to read them, but will have to wait until I'm home again. So annoying!

Can I come to your house to eat ? Gosh, but that is a yummy looking grilled dinner. I am totally envious !

Oh, now here's something you might want to try, I saw this on a cooking show on PBS. I think it was America's Test Kitchen. Try grilling the corn with the husk on. You still get all the flavor of the grilling without burning the corn kernels.

You know, I've been hearing good things about the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. I might have to put that in my pile of things to read.

great blog !

I've been hearing so much about that book series, I might just have to place a hold (among many thousands, I'm sure) at the library for the first one.

OMG, I ~love~ Jake's - well, let me clarify, I love Jake's Crawfish on 12th and Stark (I think I already mentioned this in a previous post - perhaps what spurned you to jones for the bay shrimp and rockfish alfredo? :) Their menu is so diverse and delicious and they are so amazing with service (hence, your clam-gasm *giggle*). Glad you were able to enjoy a well-earned meal there! What restaurant were you headed to that was closed?

And what an evil little smile on that puppy dog - cute! emoticon

OK - now I'm hungry after looking at the picture of dinner.... thanks a lot :). Better go have a snack as soon as I am finished with this post. It looks delish.
Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend - except for the Kleenex caper by devil dog. But, Parker looks like an angel....

Seriously, when are you having me over for dinner?! I want bugs, grass and corn! Looks deeeeelicious and is inspiring me for when I hit up the grocery store this week :) We just got a new (used - scored from the curb!) grill, so I think it's time to fire it up!

Hi...I stopped by because Puddlecrazy had left not one but two comments. She was just doing her poodle thing. I have to admit that they are handsome!
I am headed to Portland (from NY) on Friday of this week. I had thought I would pack a rain jacket, but really since May 15????? The weather here is hot and sunny...you make Portland sound less than the ideal vacation spot! emoticon
I am sure I will not care. My nephew is graduating and the entire family is spending a few days in Portland, then Seattle, then Victoria. We have a 15 passenger van...ages 22 to 62...should be fun.
I'll look back through your blogs for more info on Portland! That was incredibly helpful!

Oh my, your grilled dinner looks fantastic! We still haven't gotten the grill going. I have a new goal for the day; clean the outside kitchen and make a new shopping list.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is on my summer reading list, but I am in the thick of reading "Shantaram." I am glad to hear "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is both a good read and a good movie. I am compulsive about reading the book first, so I hope the movie will be available on video.

Ah, seafood! Having grown up on the East Coast, I sorely miss good sea food. I am jonesing for a good clam-gasm. I'd be looking like Meg Ryan in her famous restaurant scene. emoticon

We can get clams in OH, but I am suspicious of them here.

As usual, loved your blog!

Chris

    Dear Parker,

Thank your mommy for showing me your picture. Now I am head over heels in love with you... you are a HUNK! And... you are such a good listener, a hard trait to find in men these days. You actually got my message about the tissues; aren't they just the best?

Good job with telepathizing the waitress into bringing those mussels!

Love,
Stella

True to form, Rooby - superb stuff. My mouth was watering, my eyes were watering and finally my heart has melted. I've just done another powerwalk (leave the fainting to me) and will donate some of my burnt calories to your efforts today.

Thanks for making me giggle.
