I've struggled with social anxiety disorder in the past (still do to some extent) and it left me without close friends for many years. What really helped me was talking to a counselor about it. I know how debilitating irrational thinking can be. Best wishes.

I'm sure that no one hates you... you seem like a really nice guy! Maybe they are just shy to talk to you or they can see that you are uncomfortable so they leave you alone. I've had classes where i didn't make a single friend or didn't talk to a single person all year unless I was made to, and there are other classes where I made some really good friends. just hang in there, dont shy away from the confidence, look at how many nice people are on here and encouraging, there are people like that in the real world as well :)

did something specific happen at school to invoke the negative thinking? Or is this just an overall perception?

Here's a thought Steve: by now I'm sure you must have had a number of occurrences in which you dreaded an event or somehow had the worst of expectations of a person / situation as you feared some sort of negative evaluation and WHOOPS! lo & behold you were proven to be wrong!
Folks responded positively to you and were pretty decent after all!

What if this is the case with regard to school...? I know how doubt can often creep into our minds from a negative perspective, but how about leaving some room for doubt of the POSITIVE variety...?

Just a thought...along with two thumbs up for your ongoing efforts to pump it up! YEAH!

Been raining a lot down here in Georgia where we're staying with our son & fiancée...I think I've figured out that this may be why I see so few cyclists around...! :-)

btw, love your new profile pic!
