When I first started Spark People it was because of a co-worker. I had gained a lot of weight through fertility treatment. Now I was dealing with all of the self-image issues that come from unsuccessful treatment, but also with the image issues that came from the extra weight. And I was trying to find a healthy way to lose it. Spark People appealed to me immediately because the focus wasn't strictly on weight loss. In fact, it's hardly on weight loss at all; the focus is on being a happier, healthier (and for most members, leaner) individual! But, most everyone here already knows that, don't they?
Well, that didn't seem so obvious to my husband right at first. He was happy to see me so excited about the community, but not being overly comfortable with computers he wasn't able to experience The Spark the way I had. Initially, the changes I was making in our lifestyle seemed to be more of a punishment than a favor. But oh, how things have changed!
It's been about a year and a half since I was first Sparked. We now eat salad with nearly every dinner. My husband who once avoided most any fruit or vegetable now can't seem to get enough. I am keeping off 15 pounds and working on losing 10-15 more. And my husband (who's not officially a Spark Member) has lost 20 pounds! He's reduced how much pop he drinks, and now he even takes the lead in supporting our healthier lifestyle.
In fact, we're on vacation, and:
We made sure to pack whole grain bread, fruits, veggies, Cheerios, and other healthy foods so that we wouldn't have to eat out and/or be tempted by all those empty calories at every meal time.
We've found a way to exercise every day! There's not even a fitness center where we're staying. But we're walking, swimming, and looking for ways to get up and move. Better yet, I think I'll meet my yearly fitness minutes goal before we make it home!
I'm so proud of us!
