Measurements Matter

Thursday, May 27, 2010

Why do I have such a hard time remembering to take my measurements?

I have been really struggling the last few months with losing weight. I'm so close to my goal that it takes about 6 weeks to lose a pound. However, I knew my body fat % and BMI were both coming down, so I took my measurements. The last time I had done that was about 12 weeks ago.

The numbers were a complete shock. Except for my upper arm, I had lost inches everywhere.

Lesson learned - the scale is but one measure of achievement.

Very good observation! I'd add "the more measures the merrier" or "having measures other than weight is important".

And oh look... your BMI stayed the same! Yet you are probably significantly healthier due to (or observable by) improved body composition. Screw the height/weight people... and GOOD GOING!

Thanks for the reminder--I need to get out the tape measure myself, it's been awhile! Sure helps to see THOSE numbers go down even if the scale refuses to cooperate. You are doing amazing!

Completely true and yet I lose sight of that every time! Through my experience last year when I started Spark I learned that I always drop inches way before any significant amount of weight comes off. This challenge I'm not too concerned at all with the scale.

Great job on doing your measurements and I'm so happy you were pleasantly surprised.

Love it! Time to use switch to other measures of success! How about self-esteem? Clothes fit? How you feel? I definitely need to switch up my measurements of success.

Congrats on the lost inches!!!

emoticon I however don't do measurements because no one can seem to even get the same measurement twice on me.

You are so right! I seem to avoid taking measurements for some reason but faithfully jump on the scale and get discouraged when it does not move at the rate I want it too. I need to invest in a tape measure and use it regularly to help monitor progress. It sounds like you are doing great. I am sure you will be at your goal in no time.
