Beware of Turkeys!

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

I sure screamed today. I bought some new nordic pole yesterday for hiking and took them on a trail with me today to give them a try. This trail was kind of overgrown and I was watching out for poison ivy. I had just stepped over a log and heard a funny noise just in front of me. I screamed at first and then it jumped up and off the trail. It was a huge turkey!!! It was really gobbling but then it started to run at me to chase me off. I backed up and kept backing up and it got really agressive and started running after me down the trail, gobbling up a storm. Holy smokeys!!! I had my poles in front of me prepared to use them if it came close enough but I guess it thought it had chased me far enough, and made me scream a second time quite loud.

I didn't think that turkeys could be agressive like that but I did a quick search and it looks like they are. There is a neighbourhood near Boston that is battling these birds. Looks like the story is from November 2006.

Nothing like a 30 pound bird chasing you to give you a start first thing in the morning. I had my camera with me too but who thinks of grabbing a camera when a bird is trying to run you down.

Oh my! We have wild turkeys occassionally in our yard; but so far I've never been close and never been chased. I had no idea that were that aggressive either.

Glad you got out of the situation unharmed & without having to make use of those poles...although it is great you had them with you to defend yourself if that became necessary.

I'm sorry to admit that I did get quite a chuckle when I picture you scrambling backwards trying to avoid the gobbler. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your hike.

I was reading your blog and my grandniece, CJ, heard me laughing. I shared your adventure with her and we both got a good laugh out of it, although I'm glad it wasn't us encountering an angry turkey! Nothing like a little excitement on a routine hike! lol

Wow I didn't know that. I have wild turkeys come through my yard from time to time. I'll remember to stay up on the deck.

What a hoot! I wish someone else would have taken video of that! There are tons of turkeys all around us but I haven't encountered one while out walking yet. Glad you survived!

See, Nordic poles can come in handy! Maybe it was a female trying to protect her little ones?

I bumped into a razorback a few months ago, it scared the living daylights out of me, but less than my first encounter with a bear in Alaska... I didn't know I could run before meeting him, my feet were still running in the RV! LOL

I love Nordic Walking, and I hope you'll enjoy the next hikes and won't meet any other wild animals.
