What A Day!!!!!

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

I had complete knee replacement two years ago. One thing that stands out in my mind from that experience, was the repeated advice re: NOT GETTING AN INFECTION after the surgery, because the infection could travel right to the knee. I even have to take 4 huge antiobiotics an hour before I get my teeth cleaned!!!
Yesterday I was getting ready to meet friends, when I discovered a bump on the back of THAT KNEE. When I checked it out, I discovered that a tick had burrowed in and all I could manage to remove were his 2 back legs. It was red and it hurt!!! I called the nurse at the knee surgeon's office and she said to get to my primary Dr. immediately. I went right to her office because I wanted them to see how scared I was in person!!! That way, maybe, they wouldn't put me off. My Dr. was on vacation!!! Luckily, a Physician's Assistant over-heard my plea and told the office staff that he would fit me in. I think he saw the terror in my eyes and didn't want to mess with a crazy woman!!!
He froze the area and cut it open to see if he could find the rest of the tick. He only found 1 leg and said that it probably dropped out when I was in the shower. He cleaned it all out and told me to put hot compresses on it and watch it for any development of infection.
What relief..........and I even made it to the movie on time and was able to relax and enjoy it.
If you live in an area highly populated with ticks.........check your body carefully.......even behind your knees!!!!!

I live in an area where tics abound. I have to "de-tick" my family daily including our 3 dogs. We know well the dangers of tick bites as my DH suffered (horribly) with Rock Mountain Fever from a bite on his leg. He was six months recovering. On any given day I remove 30 (or more) ticks from our household. Odd though we don't have fleas! Thank goodness.

Oh, what a scare! So glad you found it when you did and went immediately to have it taken care of. I HATE TICKS!

I checked today after going on a field trip to a wooded & grassy area.
Last week I had 2 students in 1 day with ticks--one in my classroom & one in the computer lab during indoor recess.

Check with your dentist on the antibiotics... They told me they don't want patients doing that anymore because it can be counter productive for those times when you really do need them. I used to take them as well for the dentist.

Anyone going out in the summer should always check for ticks. They can lurk in bushes, trees, and even from other animals we come in contact with. I am happy you found yours before other complications set in!!! emoticon
