Wallpaper workout

Sunday, May 16, 2010

We live in a house that is 103 years old. The previous owners were elderly and in poor health for years, so aside from basic maintenance they did little to upgrade. I have, with a little help from my husband (very little if you ask me) replastered and painted the first floor with the exception of the kitchen, which we plan to do next year.
When we moved in 7 years ago, we found the receipt for the wallpaper in my bedroom. It was dated 1968! I figured it was time to get rid of the deary, awful stuff. In places it's cracked and dried out, so I peeled away some of it . I counted 7 layers. 7 layers of the ugliest wallpaper I ever saw in my life! I suppose these patterns were in vogue at one time, but not now! At one point in time, some one must have decided to paint over it (around layer 5) so there is a layer of white of paint to remove, too.
If you have ever removed wallpaper you know what a mess it can be. We bought a steam machine that works really well to heat and melt the paste, but you srtill have to scrape the soggy stuff off the walls, it falls to the floor, you walk through it and drag it all over. It's very slow going. We worked for 6 hours yesterday and did only a small portion of a big room. Both my husband and I work. The only day we have together is Saturday. At this rate we should finish around Halloween.
On the bright side, I stretched, bent, twisted and used muscles I haven't used in a long time. It looks like this will be my summer work out. I'll keep you posted.

I feel your pain but at least you are getting a workout and will have the satisfaction of having made your house look prettier!

Our house was built in 1946 but thankfully there was only one layer of wallpaper on just one wall in the kitchen. That came down very easily. Best wishes on your exercise project (oops), I mean . . . your house project. emoticon emoticon
