When appliances and electric companies don't cooperate

Saturday, May 15, 2010

I direct an after school art program - so I need to complete and turn in our non-profit tax paperwork every May 15.

But the power has gone off every day this week except Thursday. For at least an hour, every day at work, usually at lunch time when I would download the IRS forms and then type in my information and print them out.

So I downloaded the forms at home today, filled in, and got ready to print. My printer no longer turns on, so I went to DH's printer - which refuses to print the pdf files. Which means I need to put the documents on a jump drive, take them to school, print there.

And hope the IRS doesn't charge a late fee for filing late due to lack of electricity. The office here doesn't care, but the Ogden Utah people are sticklers for rules. (I've gone through this a few times, where they charge us a $2000 penalty for filing late - a nonprofit, they expect us to pay $2000 for a day late!)

GRRRRRRRRRRR - just a frustrating exercise in futility.

I was just thinking to myself that must be an awful place to live! It's practically a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY!
LOL @ "2.5".

What a pain when our appliances take on a life of their own and go on strike. Hope you get this sorted asap.

SECRETFUN should be right. I believe that any time a deadline falls on a weekend you have until Monday to get it postmarked. That should be for any IRS office, too!

Yeah, as I said, the local office will be fine with it.

I've been shocked by what the IRS main office in Utah does.

For the April deadline usually if the deadline is on a weekend/holiday it moves to the next federal working day, so it should be due May 17 not May 15 since not all post offices are open May 15. Not sure that is the case, but it saved me a few times on my personal filing!

There have been daily articles in the paper about the power issue - every day they say the issue is fixed. Every day the power goes out.

It's living in a second-and-a-half-world country.

Incredibly exasperating! Should be so grateful to you for running the programme so well AND for taking on the administrivia to do so.
