Another Expert Debunked

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

I recently blogged that experts don't know everthing. I saw another "study" which doesn't pan out in my family.
It said that babies born to mothers who gained a lot of weight or were not breast fed would more than likely grow up to be obese children.
Not here. I had four children. I gained a lot of weight with each one and did not breast feed the first 3. The first one--overweight me and no breast milk--is a very small petite girl. The second one--not breast fed--is slightly overweight. The third one is slightly overweight and over six feet tall. The last one--I DID breast feed is probably the heaviest of the four.
So experts don't know it all!

Two girls here - both breastfed. One overweight and one just right. I gained 55 pounds with the first and right at 30 with the second. I also had gestational diabetes with the second and gained no weight in the last two months. The first one was 8lbs 12oz and 21-3/4 inches long - she is about 5'10" or 5'11" now. The second one was 7lbs 1oz and 20-3/4 inches long - she is about 5'5-1/2" now. The first one was thin until she was about 3 to 4 years old. The second one was a fat baby with rolls on her legs. They defy the experts as well.

Another recent article talked about the low incidence of breast cancer among Hispanics, mentioning that Nuns have the highest incidence. To me this says they need to look at the rate differences in women who do or don't breastfeed. As far as I know, there has never been any breast cancer in my family, but all the women have breastfed their children. The only scare we had was when my mom had a calcium deposit turn up in a milk duct.
