On My Way to the Land of Deep Frying

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

I'm heading off to England for a wedding today. The wedding meal? Fish and chips from the groom's fave fish and chip place! I requested a child's portion.

My goal is to maintain my current weight, 295, over the week I am there.

My strategies:

Eat dinner just before I go to the airport (I'm somehow convinced that food in airports and on the plane doesn't count for calories).

I'm bringing a little tupperware container with me full of grapes and almonds for the flight--I'll do my best to keep it full with healthy snack food while in the UK.

Find somewhere to buy fresh fruit close to where I'm staying and stock up on apples.

Try and find a restaurant near my hotel that has some healthy food choices (harder than you might think).

Leave food on my plate.

NO sausages--this will be tough, I love bangers and mash!

Have one gourmet treat meal--some really good local cheeses, or somesuch. But no crap!

Drink my 8 glasses of water and walk at least 3 miles every day.

Wish me luck! I'll let you know how I did when I get back next week (hopefully the volcano won't erupt in the meantime).

I wish everyone a great Sparkweek and success with their (realistic) goals.

Have an amazing trip! Leaving food on your plate is hard to do there (I found people would lecture me for not cleaning my plate - even down to the sad little scrap of iceberg lettuce that garnished my toasted cheese sandwich - "What's wrong with that bit?")

Still, I walked so much while I was there my eating balanced out - and the little markets were great for fruits and veg.

Have a marvelous time. You have a plan and that's half the battle. You are not going unprepared. If you gain a few pounds, they will come off quickly when you get back.
You'll have to tell us what a great time you've had when you get back!

I love the pre planning and boy am I jealous. My son, daughter and 3 grandchildren, 2 brothers and all the rest of my family are over there. I wish I were going too!

I also love Bangers and Mash and ohhhhh the fish and chips.. 800 calories for a normal portion. You won't have trouble buying fresh fruit, just ask where the local market is because they sell THE best and the quality is MUCH better than over here. Also.. eat back bacon.. back bacon is very lean and not many calories per rasher (slice) Oh WHY can't they make decent bacon here? And please don't anyone say buy Canadian.. it bears NO resemblance to the real thing. You might want to stay away from the pies and sausage rolls and pork pie is deadly! Though when I am over there I am apt to ignore that!!!

Oh have a WONDERFUL time.

I like how you have planned as much as you can for a successful week. I wish you a wonderful and safe trip.

P.S. - Is there anything better than eating fish and chips, especially the authentic British way? emoticon

Great job making a plan! I think your plan sounds like it's very do-able! I like the idea of allowing yourself a treat gourmet meal. I hope you have a great time!!

Thank you also for commenting on my blog. Maybe if I allow myself to indulge ONCE on a weekend, that will help me survive them and not feel deprived? Maybe I'll try that too.

Have a safe trip!

I am impressed with this level of planning for vacation - go warrior.

I find England supermarkets are awesome about healthy and diverse options, and carry small portions already pre-packaged and everything.

You will rock this challenge - I just know it! Woot!!

Have a fab time. XO

OMG i do the "food in the airport and on the plane doesn't count" thing, too! recognizing is a big part of dealing with it. you'll do fine!

great plan of attack for the week. just having the plan will help you do far better than you would have if you tried to wing it. have a fun time - eat less than you would have before - exercise - and you'll come back with wonderful memories and a happy scale!

have a great time!
