A bookshelf for my kitchen. Now only my bathroom is without one!
Oh cookbooks, I've fallen in love with you over the past year! Once you were stacked on bottom shelves or in dusty corners, gifts given to me by my mom and brother and flipped through when I needed a recipe in an instant. Your piles grew, I started carrying you around with me, reading you on the subway or at a cafe. I discovered the carefully written words that accompanied the recipes and found that even when a bazillion cooks write about the same dish, I will take the advice of the witty and personable chef who throws in a bit of cheek and calls the stove "the hob". Oh cookbooks! My instincts have been honed because of you! I'm now basically able to avoid the exact recipes you hold because I've read about the processes and know what ingredients create which reactions. And now, a home for you, a proper bookshelf in the center of it all!
Thanks for letting me wax romantic. After my blickity blech day yesterday it's pretty wonderful to get so delighted about my foundling bookshelf and the wonderful cookbooks it now houses.
It was the first farmers market of the year today and the farm I'm hopefully volunteering for didn't come out, which means I was able to wake up at my leisure and bought from whichever vendors. At this time of year, there really only 3 things a girl wants: rhubarb, spargel (asparagus), and green garlic. I bought the first couple items and held off on the green garlic for next week, post budget challenge. I did, however, by free range eggs and a miche and 3 macarons from the bakery, bringing my food total for the past week and a half to $84.50. We're getting close and I'm out of onions, yikes! Oh well.
We had such a delicious dinner today; fresh asparagus with garlic and lemon, wrapped in bacon, with two eggs on top and the delicious delicious miche bread from Bennison's to bring it all together. I then made an apple rhubarb and raspberry crumble pie (without a recipe, thank you very much) for dessert. Two desserts in one day AND bakery bread AND bacon and I'm still within my range?! Woot!
A little bit collapsed but perfectly delicious nonetheless.
Tomorrow I'm making some sort of brunch concoction, maybe some banana muffins, and then grown-up sloppy joes for dinner! Don't ask what this entails because I don't altogether know yet ;-)
happy Mother's Day to all you mamas out there! My brother moves to Hawai'i tomorrow and it will be ages before I see him next :-(
