Fruity “Ice Cream”

Saturday, May 01, 2010

Happy May Day! It is a brand new month. The best month of all, considering it has my birthday in it. =) I hope you all had a fabulous Saturday!

As I have mentioned before I have been having it pretty rough the last few days. Probably wouldn’t be as stressful to some, but it has been more than I can handle! Thank goodness I have an amazing God who can handle much, MUCH more than I can.

I have been giving in to more emotional eating. Old habits die hard! Even ones I haven’t had for quite some time. But I’m tired of it! So instead of giving in to unclean, unhealthy ice cream, I have made up a few batches of some awesome fruity “ice cream” inspired by Coach Stepfanie and her banana “soft-serve.” I wrote about her recipe before here:

And I have to tell you, it’s pretty darn tasty.

While the banana soft-serve is good on its own, I knew I could take it to another place by throwing some other fruits. Whether I wanted to add frozen strawberries,

peaches,

or grapes,

to the frozen banana, I could enjoy some extra fruity goodness!

What do you do with all of this frozen fruit? You blend it until smooth, which involves pulsing, and pulsing…oh yeah and it’s going to take a lot more pulsing until you achieve this:

You can then enjoy a serving out of a small dish like this:

or this:

Or you can eat the whole batch out of a big bowl like this:

You can even stir in some greek yogurt like this:

Any way you have it you are going to want more! You can make multiple batches of them at once and have your freezer look like this:

Yup! They slide right in there next to the Ezekiel bread and pistachios. Just move over your frozen veggies and you can enjoy many servings of “ice cream” throughout the week.

Do you have any problems with emotional eating? What do you do to lift your spirits that doesn’t revolve around food?

You can also "stew" the other fruit and spoon a teaspoon or two over your "ice cream". (I love "stewed" strawberries over ice cream.)

I also have an ice cream maker so I can make my own concoctions using only fresh ingredients. It has a cylinder that you freeze, then add ingredients, set on the base and turn on. I stopped using it for awhile, but have recently brought it out of hiding and plan on using it again instead of buying that chemical stew they sell in the stores!

Next time bananas are on sale, I am going to freeze some and try this ice cream. Thanks for sharing....

P.S. Love the idea of preportioning into the freezer. Not such a temptation to overeat that way.....

Awesome way to handle things. I am an emotional eater, drinker and smoker! I have been under soo much stress these past few months I had to go to see a therapist before I turned into a wild animal. I was able to put the food down, I came to the conclusion that the booze only made things worse so that too got put away but the smoking came back full force. I stopped smoking about 10 years ago, but it never let me go. It was like an old friend that was there when I needed comfort.
But now that a lot of the stress is being lifted off my old friend is being put away again. And as much as I hate to see friends go this is one I HAVE to let go.

This sounds so good. I'm totally gonna try this recipe! Does it matter if I use a blender rather than a food processor?

oooh, thanks for this blog! I recently tried the banana version and I liked it!! I thought about adding or subbing other fruit but wasn't sure how it would turn out. Glad to see that it turns out good! :) Will have to try it.

The brain has two primary directives–pleasure seeking and survival. From childhood we have learned to associate food with both. Associated with pleasure are what most call good emotions–happiness, joy, elation and so on. Associated with survival are what most call bad emotions–frustration, boredom, confusion, anger, depression and so on.

Unfortunately most programs to lose weight or deal with binging focus on food and forget the emotional programming.

Focusing on what you do or do not eat to control or lose weight is like trying to fly by flapping your arms. Better to focus on the stress of the emotion whether it be frustration, happiness, upset, anger, joy and learn to take it straight rather than diluting with food.

I've been making the banana "ice cream" for years. I found that recipe in one of Victoria Moran's books. I've never tried freezing it though. Does the banana turn brown? Also, I've never thought of adding other fruit. What a great idea!

I've also been having a hard time with emotional eating this past week. It seems I'll be going along great, and then all of a sudden the eating will hit me. I'm really trying to reign it in, but I caved again last night (peanut butter and saltines).

Good luck with your eating today.

I eat frozen fruit smoothies alot but you have just inspired me to make some Ice cream to freeze. With the advice of Kryanprincess I just watched Food Inc tonight and wow I'm even more inspired to eat clean :o)

Thanks!!!!

Oh I made a yummy almost clean cabbage salad the other day I will blog about it soon. I'm proud though the dressing I choose I based on making sure NO HFCS :o) not calories. I just use a very small amount (1 tablespoon for a pretty big bowl) and will make it sometime in the future.

I really like the taste when you added the fruit to it. I will admit that sometimes I do have a problem with emotional eating. But I find that being with you lifts my spirits more then food.
