DH woke me about 5:20 AM, we could hear the music starting down the hill - so we threw on our bright orange Carnival T shirts (free from the medical lab we go to, LOL), took the top off the Jeep, and rolled down the hill. Parked at DH's office (paid and gated parking, so we always use it for Carnival) and walked out to the street.
Huge crowd (like my last blog), tons of people in crazy clothes - I think that's my favorite part, the crazy outfits people put together. Women in ripped leggings over hotpants, torn Ts with lacy undies showing through, men in dresses, girls in ballet tutus or their old school uniforms, skirt waist no longer buttoning but cut short with a tank top for the "hot" school girl look - lady pirates, men pirates, friends in matching outfits, friends in rainbow sequence. All kinds of bright and colorful ensembles. Some even looking like the X-rated dominatrix outfits, all black studded spandex. As I said, just crazy!
Must have been at least 10,000 people on the waterfront, most jammed behind their favorite band on a flatbed truck - with a lot of us just dancing on the sidewalks, greeting friends in the crowd, dancing up to them, hugs, kisses, dancing greetings. Music pulsing out of the speakers loud loud loud, throbbing in your stomach from the bass, and everyone dancing.
Free towels (with advertising), free water, all kinds of stands selling drinks (alcoholic and otherwise).
We danced from 5:30 to 8:00 or so, then went for a quick coffee and scone breakfast, then back out to the music and the crowd. I saw one woman who was dancing while her friend filmed her - dancing and shaking and rolling her tush, as if it had a life of its own - one of those dance moves I try to emulate but I just don't have enough tush to make it do the gyrations she was managing - when she finished, I walked over and asked if she could give me lessons - she just laughed and kissed me - and that's the essence of J'Ouvert, joking with a random stranger, laughing and getting a kiss from someone I've never seen and probably never will again. Just general happiness and random friendliness, all to throbbing background music, amidst general craziness!
Plus 8000 steps by 9 AM!
