Crocheting Burns Calories! See how many!

Friday, April 30, 2010

I was sitting here crocheting this morning when I started to feel guilty about not doing any exercise yet today and wasting time crocheting. Just for the heck of it, I looked for a website that would tell me how many calories I burn doing various activities around the house. What I found was very interesting.

www.mycaloriecounter.com
/Calories_Burned.asp
Click on 'Calculators and Tools', then on 'Calories Burned'

This site gives you lots of information, including the number of calories you burn for your weight. You search for the activity, type in your weight and how long you did that activity, and it tells you how many calories you burned. Here are a few of the things I found out. All were checked at my current weight and for a duration of one hour:

Crocheting - 173 calories per hour. Kinda makes me not feel guilty about this morning!

Cleaning the house - 346 calories per hour. If that's not motivation to begin my Spring
cleaning, nothing is!

Doing the laundry - 231 calories per hour. I think I'll go put a load in the washer now!

Putting away the laundry - 266 calories per hour. Hmmm, maybe I won't let them sit in the
laundry basket all week!

And, for when I am REALLY being a couch potato:
Watching television - 115 calories per hour. I always knew TV was healthy for me!

I am not advocating inactivity, but it does make me feel somewhat better knowing that I can burn calories by doing absolutely nothing or by doing the chores I hate to do. Sometimes I find motivation in very strange places...lol. I wonder how many calories I burned writing this blog?

    LOL, love it!

appropriate r&r is ok to do, guilt free, even. (rest, relaxation, reflection, respite, rejuvenation, refresh, rarin2go are all some of my fav R words)

    my trick is finding the balance b/c i would prefer life 2 B 95% r&r, 5% chores!

f I had a silver spoon! I'm not sure that would be a good thing, but I'd call that the Disney syndrome or like a kid in a toy/candy store ;)

Dang, you must crochet energetically. I would have thought that crocheting would be just one tick above sitting and staring at the wall!

You are too funny. When I had first joined BLC12 last season, one of the captains had mentioned that web site. I had bookmarked it but forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder. And you're right, does make you feel better!

De, your so funny! I knit alot, so I'm glad to see it burns some calories. I don't feel guilt at all about sitting and knitting, its kind of like meditating. Made 3 blankets so far this year and donated them to warmupamerica. Now I'm working on chemo hats for the local cancer unit. Thats for the link, I have added it to my favorites. emoticon

Ok so now that you have gained momentum to get off the couch and do something...just think of all those things that burn even more calories, which would mean more weight off the middle! I have to take my own advise here...so don't think you are the only one who needs the motivation to get busy!

    Keep up the hard work!
