MY fave museum and MY fave new art piece

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

A Spark friend asked what was my favorite art museum/gallery seen on the trip, and my favorite NEW piece of artwork seen - since those were the questions I asked the students.

My favorite museum is the National Gallery of Art - although I also love the Art Institute of Chicago (but that wasn't on this trip) - and I see new pieces but also visit many old friends.

And one of my favorite works there is a lovely painting by Winslow Homer, little known - a woman in fashionable clothing, walking in the autumn forest - almost a fashion magazine piece - and of course, the web photo doesn't do it justice:

My favorite NEW artwork seen on this trip was at the Corcoran, actually, where they were having a retrospective of Georgia O'Keefe - one of her flower paintings, in unbelievable flaming colors, all red and orange and coral, with bits of yellow and purple and pink - just wild and energetic and gorgeous!

Of course, there are all the wonderful French Impressionists, the Italians, the Dutch masters, the Americans.......but if I had to pick one, that's it.

LOVE that Georgia!! Oh my!! Did you share your faves with your students??

Two great Canadian art galleries -- the National in Ottawa (Safdie design, like a huge glass Gothic cathedral) and the Art Gallery of Toronto (just reopened after a Gehry redesign -- so fascinating with its twisty staircase).

But it would be hard for me to choose a favourite gallery/favourite piece. You've got me thinking about it, though!

Love them both. And I'm so lucky to live here near all this good mostly free art.

I really like the flower painting it is beautiful. Not so sure about the lady though. On the whole I have very different taste to you where art and poetry are concerned. That is good. it makes things very interesting.

Thanks for sharing your favorites. I love the autumn colors in Homer's painting. What a beautiful background for a lovely lady. BUT, the flower painting is so vivid. I would love to see more of her works.
