If your chicken smells like sulfur...

Sunday, April 25, 2010

DH cut open the wrapper on a brand new roasting hen and the smell was awful. At first I just thought it was DH emoticon since I'd never been around chicken that smelled that way.

Anyway, I looked it up on the internet and a gas is released from chicken when it has become ridden with salmonella. You guessed it: that gas smells like sulfur. DH threw the hen away and cleaned everything really well before starting on plan b for supper but he must have missed something because he spent part of the evening pretty sick.

Hope somebody who didn't know about the smell reads this because my first inclination was to just rinse the bird really well and still cook it. I had no idea.

FYI, in case you read my blog on the soybeans, DH and I don't get food poisoning on a regular basis. Just got lucky this week. emoticon

when i was 17, i worked at a kentucky fried chicken. i walked thru the kitchen one day on the way to the bathroom and i got a wiff of the chicken they were fixing to flour and fry, and i stopped and told them that chiken was rotten. they then threw it away and got fresh chicken. if i hadn't walked thru when i did they would have fed a lot of people bad chicken. i was surprised that they did not notice the smell right away!!!!

i hope you thought to call the store you purchased it from so they could pull the other chickens. otherwise they are selling poisonious chickens to people that could become very ill and possibly die. you could save other people from harm.
i hope your poor husband recovers soon.
thanks for posting this i had no idea about the sulfer smell either.
