Frustration with Rainforest Cafe

Friday, April 23, 2010

My husband and I are taking 7 seminary students to the Rainforest Cafe tonight for dinner. I have been online trying to find nutritional information. Nothing. Called the restaurant, they said call the corporate office. Called the corporate office, they said the person who has that information is away from his desk but they can email me the list. I was so happy until I received the email below. It says,

"Good afternoon Ms. Miller,
Following our telephone conversation, I have researched the status of nutritional information for the Rainforest Cafe. I regret to report that, although we are working on this project, we do not yet have the results. Sarah- Culinary Systems Manager"

I was really hoping to get something besides Grilled Chicken or a salad. Oh well.

I also have become frustrated trying to find nutritional information for Rainforest Cafe. My family took me there for my birthday today, and I'm not able to effectively track my calories. It's too bad that such a cool restaurant doesn't appear to be forthcoming with their nutritional information.

Unfortunately Rainforest Cafe still doesn't post their nutritonal information. Found this blog as I was googling Rainforest Cafe nutrition so I can track what I ate yesterday. I think restuarants need to face facts, America is now a nation of over weight people that are trying to be more aware of what they eat and how they eat, and if they don't have a way to share the nutritional information of thier dishes they are going to lose business.

Once I got to the Rainforest Cafe, I found grilled Salmon on the menu. Life is good again. Thank you for letting me know about the Outback and Boston Market. I have to rely on the information they give me. If they aren't honest, it affects my health. Fast Food restaurants are better about giving the information than a sit down place. I have asked at Chili's, Red Robin and Ruby Tuesdays. All had their information available at the restaurant.

I have had the same problem with Outback Steakhouse when we received a gift certificate. I read that they have fought being required to give nutrition information.

I wrote to them and protested courteously. I also said I would be patronizing businesses that do provide this information.

Boston Market has good information on their website. BE CAREFUL--and this made me laugh out loud--the first column lists portion size in grams (where most charts like this put calorie amount!). A casual glance will make you think an item has far less calories than it actually does, since we're accustomed to finding a food name and quickly checking the first column for calorie amount! Not technically deceptive, but sly . . .

Good for you for at least asking for the information! Maybe if we all started demanding to see this, the restaurants would start to feel pressure to make improvements. As long as we go in and eat whatever they offer without question, they'll have no reason to change. But imagine if all nutritional information was printed on a sign outside the restaurants. Think they'd get the message when people started turning away and going to a competitor where they'd find less fat, sugar, and salt? I don't want to see laws made for this. I think you have the perfect approach- call or write all the way to the top and let them know it does make a difference to many of us! I salute you for your efforts!
