Are you celebrating Earth Day?

Thursday, April 22, 2010

I went to the coffee cart this morning, for my tea latte and cranberry bread - I haven't had time to shop, much less bake my low-cal muffins, between trips. So I'm doing bkfst the lazy way and going to the coffee cart.

I always carry my travel cup and thermos - it just seems reasonable. Zero difficulty for me, and much better for the environment.

So today, each tea latte cost only 75 cents - $1 OFF for bringing in my cup - the owners' way of celebrating Earth Day.

Made me wonder, how else can I celebrate Earth Day? Grocery shop with re-usable bags? Save plastic packaging and re-use whenever possible. Use the stop-flow device when showering in the morning. Don't let the water run while brushing teeth, washing dishes, etc. (And then I look at how much paper my students go through in a day, and I shake my head.)

Other ideas? What are YOU doing to celebrate Earth Day? Planting a tree or garden? Recycling? Re-using? Walking or biking instead of driving? What else can I do? What else can WE do?

Wow - makes me want to NOT celebrate now!!!! And I know exactly the guy you mean - he was extradited from France or something, right? The woman's sister was on the news about it and all a few years ago?

Just as a side note and to play devil's advocate, did you know that Earth day was started by a convicted murderer?

Ira Einhorn killed his girlfriend and kept her in his closet. Then he ran away to Europe for 17 years, trying not to get extradicted back to the U.S. He was finally brought back and convicted in 2002, I believe.

Anyway, so while I have no trouble with the concept of Earth Day, I do have issues with it's creator. And I find it interesting that most people do not know this fact.

I did not know it was earth day. Shame on me. I will have to give some thought into what I should do. I already recycle practically everything. I can take my owcup when I go for coffee. Wont get a discount though. Thats a shame.

Today is my best friend's 21st birthday, so I don't know if I'll be celebrating much tonight, but today I'm making sure to go on my walks and water my garden!
