Solo Half Marathon and What I Learned!

Monday, April 19, 2010

Today I completed my second half marathon for 2010 and it differed from many others I have done.
I learned that I am capable of getting myself up and ready and out the door by my deadline - no one was waiting on me or picking me up. I know that I missed my race buddies! WooHoo - Janet and John in Outer Banks, NC!
I learned that fog cannot stop me from getting to my destination and that it isn't as frightening to drive in as I might have thought. I also learned that fog and mist do not necessarily mean cold - I shed my lightweight jacket before mile one!
I learned that I can make pretty wise decisions - parking at the finish line and taking the bus to the start line was a perfect decision - fewer cars and not a lot of riders on the bus so it was really quiet and peaceful - especially when we arrived at the start line and I saw the line of cars waiting to park.
I learned that hills will not defeat me - even if they are named Monster Hill, Dam Hill or Bingham Hill - I can do it! And I wasn't alone!
I did learn that I should really review the course info related to fuel stations and always carry my own sport drink - didn't see any on the course - did I miss that?
I learned that I can "RUN", ok runners, you really should stop laughing now. I may not be fast but for me it was running - and I loved it. I changed up my pace several times throughout the race and it felt wonderful.
I learned that I can exceed my expectations and surprise myself. This was my personal challenge - to do this race and finish without being a "pedestrian" because I didn't make the cut offs!
I know this but reaffirmed it today - I love doing Half Marathons and I am going to return next year and do this one again! So, look out!

Well, it looks like I will have to return to add photos - having issues with the size - so, look for a future installment!
