New Blood Glucose Meter

Friday, April 16, 2010

I clicked on one of the sponsor links here on Spark, and was sent a coupon for a new meter for testing blood glucose levels.

On Monday I picked up a box of test strips and the coupon arrived Tuesday but there was a catch. You only got the free meter when you bought a box of test strips. Well they are expensive (almost $80 per box, so I wasn't going to be buying another any time soon so tonight on my way home from work, I stopped in at the pharmacy and asked if he could back date it so I could use the box just purchased for the new meter. This guy is very helpful and I always like it when he is on duty. He looked up my file on the computer and said yes!

So I came home with the new One Touch Ultra 2. Read the manual when I got home. Sound like a nice machine, will let me mark each reading as before or after meal, and leave some comments on each reading, such as too much food, not enough food, no exercise, or no medicine, and so on. Sounds pretty handy. I am going to order the cable and get the software so I can download the results to my computer and keep track of them there.

I still have a few of the old strips and want to use them up (can't afford to waste them) so I will continue to use the old machine until all the strips are used. Then I will start using this new machine.

I have a one touch and like it. The model is the ultra mini. I also have an Accu-Chek aviva nano which I actually prefer. I like getting them for free and I have done that with 3 or 4 meters now...lol

A new meter.....that's great! I hope you like it, it does sound pretty impressive.
My mom was a diabetic so I'm familiar with the necessities and the costs that pertained to being a diabetic.

Hugs, Irene

I have used One Touch meters for years and have liked them. When I have my bloodwork done for my endo appts they always do a meter check, and it has always come back spot on accurate. I have the Ultra Mini, and it doesn't do anything special, such as averages and meal notes. I have been looking at the ultra 2 for a while now. Let us know how you like it. If it works well for you, I might get one of my own.

It is great that your pharmacy let you back date.

Congratulations on the new meter! I have the Ultra One Touch that I got free last year. The only problem I have with it is that it reads about 20 points higher than my Freestyle Lite meter. For the longes time I thought my numbers were all out of whack and when I used my old meter, my numbers were where they had been all along. So if you notice that your numbers are higher than they should be, use your older meter again.
