What is the obsession with bacon?

Sunday, April 11, 2010

I cannot believe the obsession with bacon in this country since the Atkins diet came out years ago. When I go to a restaurant for lunch or dinner, I expect to find one or two items that do not break the calorie-counting bank, but I am finding it harder all the time. A restaurant down the street has a grilled chicken sandwich on the menu that also has bacon and cheese. Yes, I can order it without these items, but it makes me angry that they ruin a fairly healthy meal with the added fat and calories. Another place puts bacon on all their salads. This is really irritating because most of the salads are pre-made. Now I read an entry about KFC making a sandwich that is actually bacon and cheese between two pieces of fried chicken. How can these places continue to create menu items that are so unhealthy? Isn't it bad enough that the portions have become so out of control that a meal can be turned into three meals? Is this bacon fascination as irritating to anyone else as it is to me?

I've also read newspaper articles about bacon ice cream, chocolate covered bacon, etc. I actually believe one slice of bacon as an occasional treat in an egg white omlette or on a turkey sandwich is reasonable. But not in a salad or on a burger.

i don't go out and eat that often. part of it is because of financial expense but also nutritionaly expensive. i generally avoid a fried sandwhiches and especially don't but bacon on it!

I never realized untill i started watching that 1 serving of bacon is 2 slices not 5 or 6! if the rest of the meal is balanced, 1 swerving of bacon should not be so bad. most resteraunts aren't balanced. so i don't eat bacon at resturaunts!

You should watch Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. He has a similar rant about french fries

* OMG yeah, I heard about that. That sandwich sounds totally gross (I say this as one who like all ingredients involved). That and the McGriddle are over the top.
