Only 49 Years Old

Yesterday, my best friend died of a heart attack. She was only 49 years old, my age. She was a gentle, giving soul who loved the Lord and was generous beyond compare. She was a talented photographer, bright, and always concerned for others. Her lifestyle, however, was unhealthy and she was very overweight with most it carried as belly fat. She knew the basics of nutrition but didn't work a program or exercise much. The consequences were tragic.
At the start of my journey with Spark People, I had the same habits as my friend and weighed almost as much. Thanks to this website and my accountability partner, I have lost 30 pounds in just over 3 months. I am walking 3 miles every other day and I am feeling better and more energetic. I am just 4 pounds away from the under 200 mark, a goal that has eluded me for many years. Please weep with me at the loss of my friend. Then rejoice that it might not be too late for me and that, with everyone's help, I will reach my wellness goals. Please learn from my dear friend's story. How you work the Spark program can save your life. When it comes to our health, the stakes are high and the risks of ignoring the warning signs are great. In my friend's memory I will make it my mission to spread the word about Spark and the need for healthier lifestyles. I am so grateful for this life saving community and the important work that is being done on this website. May God bless us on our journeys and bless those whose work behind the scenes make our progress possible.

7 1/2 months later and your words mean just as much as when they were written. I too am 49 years old.

I have a first cousin who is 47 years old. He is morbidly obese and has been for most of his life, smoked and smokes heavily, drinks way too much soda, has horrible nutrition and can't understand why he has a heart condition and needs to take coumadin for a blod clot that developed.

For whatever reason, he just doesn't get it and probably never will. Our good health should definitely not be taken for granted and yes, continue on that road toward good health...and indeed spread the spark!

Like the others, I am so sorry about your loss. Along with losses and events that make NO sense, somewhere among the tears, there are lessons, moments of clarity and even strength. I wish you all of these things. Good luck on your journey in honor of your dear friend.

Death is an enemy at any age and especially for one so young. Yes, added weight can bring on so many health issues and it is not only commendable for you to 'learn' from your friend's weight problem; but to do something about it for yourself and your family. Your friend would be proud of you, knowing that you are taking care of yourself and also, took the time to share your sadness. May you be strengthened over your loss.

Sorry about your loss. Thanks for sharing this- I'm sending this post to several of my friends who like me have become sloppy in managing their weight. I too have lots of weight around my middle, I've lost 22lbs on sparkpeople so far, but now more than ever, I will be working really hard to reduce my weight and will begin to target belly fat....thank you for sharing. Your words have really inspired me.

I am very sorry for your loss. I am also happy for you for starting to do better with eating and losing weight. It takes a lot to undo what we have been doing to our bodies for years. Every pound that comes off is a memorial to your good friend.

I also am sorry for the loss of your friend and grateful to you for sharing.. I think it is so easy to get caught up in ego and image when we take on weight issues and it seem the easiest thing to forget that we need to be doing this predominantly for our health.. anything else is a bonus..
    Hug to you!!

I AM SORRY FOR THE PASSING OF YOUR FRIEND!! EVEN IN DEATH WE ALL LEARN SOMETHING. IT MAY NOT BE A LESSON WE WANT TO LEARN BUT IF WE LOOK, WE CAN LEARN. I TOO AM 49 AND I JUST HAD A HEART SCARE AND I TOO AM HERE AND THANK GOD FOR BRINGING ME HERE AND MY HEART SCARE WAS A ALARM !!!!!

I AM TAKING CARE OF MYSELF BETTER THAN I USE TO. I AM EATING AND DRINKING WATER THAN I WOULD NOT TOUCH BEFORE. MORE FRUITS AND VEGABLES THAN EVEN I CAN HOLD SOMETIMES. SO YES THIS PLACE (SPARKPEOPLE) IS A GOD SENT PLACE. I WORK OUT 6 DAYS A WEEK, AND BEFORE THE ONLY THING I DID WAS THINK ABOUT EXERCISE. SO ALL OF US NEED TO GIVE GOD AND SPARKPEOPLE A BIG HIGH FIVE AND TELL GOD THANKYOU!!!!!!

I WANT TO LIVE TO LIVE AGAIN!!!!!

Skinny, find that your friend is truly blessed as to be with the Lord but I to would still feel the loss if this was my friend. Keep up the good work and with faith I know you will reach your goal..thank you for sharing a part of your life with us as I know how sometimes it is hard to open up especially with strangers on a subject that seems to control all of us (weight and to see ourselves and not like what we may see). Hope all goes well with your endeavors! emoticon

Our life here on this earth is so precious and we sometimes take it for granted. Not on purpose, but we get so caught up in work, bills and daily situations that we forget to live. Then we only exist. May your friend live through your found memories and I thank you for sharing your story with us. I'm at the point where I'm tired of just existing I want to live life and diet and exercise are now a big part of that. I'm inspired by you for caring enough about us to want us to be aware of what can happen if we don't take care of ourselves.I promise you this I've listened and I'm going do my very best to honor her memory by doing my best to live. May God bless you and keep you and thank you for being a spark angel. emoticon

The harshness of life allows us to be that much more thankful for the time that we have as well as those that come into our lives. My father also died early of a heart attack, only 47! It has been many years now, but there are times that I wonder what he would be doing and how life would be different with him around. Each day we make a choice and I'm so glad that you have decided to stay with us!

I feel your pain. On March 23rd, I lost my dear friend to a heart attack. She was only 51 and she fought really hard (by-pass, and etc....) Granted it has motivated me, but I just miss my friend. I am sure you know that feeling well. I am so glad that we both can tell their stories, since they aren't here.
