Walk Your Way Out of the Hospital

Sunday, March 28, 2010

Well, it's been a stressful week and I'm glad it's over. DH was hospitalized on Tuesday with extremely painful pancreatitis. I think I nearly killed him with the high fat Atkins diet. It probably wasn't a good choice for someone who doesn't have a gallbladder.

On the other hand, I'd like to credit his rapid recovery at least in part to the Wii I insisted on buying last year. It turned the couch potato into an exercise fiend.

By Thursday morning he was able to sit up and by afternoon, he was off the pain pump and ready to walk. So we walked briskly for 25 minutes. A minor setback on Friday morning kept him off solid foods for the day. By late afternoon, he was ready to walk again, so this time we power walked for a half hour. His doctor was watching and decided that if he could exercise that well, then he didn't need to be in the hospital. Hallelujah! They rolled him to the door in the wheelchair and we power walked down the parking lot to the car. And we finally got a night of uninterrupted sleep!

I know when you leave the hospital how grateful you are just to be able to GET SOME SLEEP! Glad he is better. How is he now? Pancreatitis is very serious.

Maybe you should switch to South Beach from Atkins. Still good carbs but less fat. I'm glad your hubby is out of the hospital and I hope he continues to heal well.
