Ch 4: Dreaming of Black Widows
Thursday, March 25, 2010
I dreamt that I kept reaching down into a drawer and kept getting bit by an angry and jumpy black widow. I would wake up and return to sleep, only to awaken to the same dream. I couldn’t turn off the replay; it was like Groundhog Day (actually “Night”) over and over again.
I usually don’t recall my dreams so it was refreshing to actually remember one, despite the recurring trauma. I decided to look up the meaning of black widow dreams and found some interesting interpretations. Some derive meaning from externally based factors and others have an internal focus. Here is what I found courtesy of Google:
Meaning #1: SPIDERS AS FEMALE ENERGY: When considering the symbolic meanings of spiders, one cannot overlook the image of the black widow, luring in the male to mate, and then viciously killing and cannibalizing him in order to nourish herself when her eggs have been fertilized. In this way, spiders represent the feminine energies within us. These energies are both destructive and constructive, as seen in the cycle of death and birth. If dreaming about a black widow spider, or of a spider that kills its mate, your dreams may be telling you that you are experiencing a major transformation in your life.
Meaning #2:SPIDERS AS MOTHER CONFLICTS: To dream that you are bitten by a spider, represents a conflict with your mother or some dominant female figure in your life. The dream may be a metaphor for a devouring mother or the feminine power to possess and entrap. Perhaps you are feeling trapped by some relationship.
Meaning #3: SPIDERS AS WARNINGS: To see a spider in your dream, indicates that you are feeling like an outsider in some situation. Or that you may want to keep your distance and stay away from an alluring and tempting situation. Alternatively, a spider may refer to a powerful force protecting you against your self-destructive behavior.
Meaning #4: THE ACT OF BITING: To dream that you are being bitten, represents your vulnerability regarding your unresolved issues and emotions. You may be pestered by a problem or obstacle. To dream of your hands, represents your relationship to those around you and how you connect with the world. Hands serve as a form of communication. Perhaps you need to lend out a helping hand to someone. If your hands are injured, then it denotes an attack on your ego.
If forced to make a selection from the various meanings, I would say that at this moment I feel that all of them “sort of” apply but if push came to shove then I would chose #1. The main reason being that I feel that some of the other situations have already presented themselves and that I am finally coming out of them. This is truly a time of deep introspection and metamorphosis for me. It might not be visually apparent to anyone because I still look the same, but I feel the change stirring inside me.
In Tarot, many people fear getting the “Death” card because they think it’s ominous but it actually has the same meaning as my dream. It signifies a moment of death of the old and birth of the new. It represents transformation and growth. I embrace the black widow and forgive it for disrupting my sleep. This dream confirms that I am on the right track and I’m going to listen to David Bowie now. Ch…ch…ch…changes!
