Chicks at a Day - For My Chick Loving Friends

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

This morning there were 9 babies (out of 11 eggs) in the incubator. They have been moved to a crate equipped with a lamp for heat, water, and food, plus little socks to cozy up on. The yellow chicks are day old chicks that the kindergarten teacher ordered. They just arrived today, and are in with my Australorp and barred rock babies.

The children are all thrilled and have been wonderful with the babies, and I have been like a mother hen since they started hatching.

The two eggs that haven't hatched do not show signs of pipping, so they may not have survived embryo-hood. However, there can be a few days between hatching for a clutch, so they are still being warmed in the incubator.

Such a wonderful way to bring in spring!

How cute! You know you can "candle" the last two eggs with a flashlight to see if they developed. If it is dark when you shine a light through it there is something in it, if it appears translucent, it never developed. My zebra finches' first clutch had one that didn't hatch.

They're so cute!! I raised some chickens from babies a couple of years ago and I'd love to do it again but I have 11 chickens and that's enough. This year it's baby bunnies (they were an accident) and they're very cute too!

Best,
Whee

Oh my gosh babies! I love them! I have 3 three week old Buff Orpingtons, 3 three week old easter eggers, 6 two week old Black Copper Marans, and 3 ducklings brooding away in my extra bathroom right now. I miss the cute little fluffiness of the first couple days! Your babies are adorable. :)
