Oh my...what a week this has been!!! Prayers needed.

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Our weather has been beautiful for the last several days...lots of warm sunshine, temperatures in high 40s and today low 50. However we are about to experience some severe flooding due to the melting snow and now expecting rain for about the next five days. We live very close to a large creek which feeds into the Monongahela River two miles away. I think it is about 2 feet from flood level. I am praying for everyone that may be affected in any way even along the smaller creeks. This is a problem is many, many places.
I love this sunshine and I'm so happy to be able to get out and walk in it. I also was able to ride my bike for a short while today although I have been busy with doctors, etc. not only for myself but for Ken also. We spent Monday in the ER for almost 13 hours trying to get Ken's leg taken care of...severe infection which he thinks is getting better. I am so happy that he thinks so. That isn't my opinion of course from looking at it. The doctors took an x-ray to make sure it wasn't broken (DUH) and also did a doppler test and ultrasound to rule out deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). These test results were negative. Amen!! They gave him IV antibiotics and wanted to keep him for a couple of days but he wouldn't stay. So they gave him two heavy antibiotics to take at home. He cut it at work on February 9 on a pile of metal that the construction workers threw in a pile in the boiler room and has been doctoring it at home, I thought. I didn't take care of the situation and should have at least kept an eye on it...although he is an adult and capable.
An accident report had been completed so there is no problem there. However due to the death recently of a local doctor (and a dear friend), his employer no longer has a workman's comp doctor. He went to my family doctor today...he hasn't been to a doctor in 18-20 years...and as they are not on the WC panel of doctors with the state and do not take WC claims, they were not able to treat him...could not even look at his leg. SIGH!!! After many phone calls and a couple of hours, we finally located a WC doctor who just specializes in WC claims and were able to get an appointment today. Praise God!!!

Ken's leg is now so infected that he has cellulitis...very swollen almost double in size, deep red almost as dark as a port wine birthmark with a large open sore where it was cut which is oozing yellow pus running down his leg and staining his sock yellow as well as many other smaller (not little) sores that are also open and oozing. He says it no longer is painful and hurting so badly so he thinks the antibiotics are working. All I can see is the pus running, and infection, dark red and nasty open sores and the swelling to the point it looks like it could burst. If he says it doesn't hurt, I will have to agree with him. I have been praying and asking God to please provide a healing and to lead us to the best medical care so that he doesn't lose his leg...a distinct possibility if he doesn't get this infection stopped.
emoticon emoticon emoticon If you have a moment, please keep Ken in your prayers.
I did make it to my appointment with my kidney doctor (nephrologist in Pittsburgh) on Tuesday morning, missing it was not an option with all the pain I have been having in my low back. This is very unusual for me and we still don’t know why. Dr. K did find blood in my urine and my kidneys are throwing way to much protein. She would like to do a biopsy on my kidney but as I only have one functioning kidney is hesitant as too many things can go wrong. That to me is not an option, unless it is the only option, which she doesn’t think so at this point. We are taking it one day at a time. However I still do not know anything as the results from the blood work aren't back yet. She will call me as soon as she has those results. Praise God that she is so good about that.
For all that is going on in our lives, we are truly blessed that God is taking care of us. He is truly the great Healer. Without Him in our lives, we would be in serious trouble at our house!!!
Blessings and hugs to all,

BTW: I found it interesting when I saw yesterday that March is Deep-Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Month. hmmmm....

WOW, Helen! I'm praying that our Great Physician will go in and clean out Ken's leg and anoint it with healing. For you, I'm praying that He will reveal the best way to relieve whatever is causing your pain, and to strengthen your remaining kidney. I'm standing in faith with you that our God is an awesome, miracle-working God, and that he has you and Ken nestled in the palm of His hand. For your area, I'm praying that the river waters do no damage even if He allows them to overrun their banks. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Blessings, my friend!

Helen!!! Prayers always. Speaking from the perspective of someone who works with vascular surgeons, the infection is a big deal, so encourage him to continue his dressing changes, keeping it clean and finishing all antibiotic medication. Also, if you don't have a follow up appointment scheduled for his leg to be rechecked, make one! His progress definitely needs to be monitored. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I really hope you can talk him into going into the hospital. This is just to serious to be at home. Men are stubborn and do not make good patients, but do everything you can to get him to go...even if you have to drag him there. I was hospitalized with cellulitis last summer...almost killed me. This is nothing to ignore.

Keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.

He is an adult an capable, BUT..... men are notorious for NOT taking care of themselves. My hubby is diabetic, but he will get a cut or blister an just ignore it! Makes me crazy! That would be scarey about the flooding! I will keep that in my prayers.

Praying for you! I go to a small church(which was once a corn field), but it is blessed with great people as we have had 2 people who needed new kidneys, and 2 organ donors, right in our own church!Amazing!
I really would encourage you to get your husband back to the doctor! This type of infection is nothing to play with.At best, the doctor will say it is getting better, at worst, they will take further action.I am praying for it to heal up and be good as new, the way God created it, because HE NEEDS IT!
Prayers to you sister!
