Journey to a Century

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Lao Tzu "The Journey of a Thousand miles must begin with a single step." So, the journey of a Century (100 mile bike ride) must begin with a single spin.... and today I took that spin!

Whoa. I suppose it might not have been the wisest of decisions to choose a Century bike ride called HotterNHell Hundred when the only bike you've been on in years is the one that reclines at the gym. A few bricks shy of a full load perhaps?? It'd be like someone who ice skated once deciding to become an Olympic Speed Skater ala Apolo Ohno.. okay.. maybe not THAT crazy.. but still!

Today I went on my very first ride on my brand new black beauty of a bike... named.... drum roll please.. DubYah... for those of you not from the south that would be "double u". W. It stands for William Wallace in honor of my trip to Scotland that is coming up in October. I've named all my stuff Scots names... my 3 kettlebells are MacGregor, Duf and Kit... and now "W". I like it. It's simple and understated... and has meaning to me.

William Wallace speaks to me "I am William Wallace, and I see a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny.. you've come to fight as free men.. and free men you are... what will you do without freedom? will you fight? fight and you may die.. run and you'll live.. at least a while.. and dying in your beds many years from now.. will you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that.. for ONE CHANCE... just ONE CHANCE.. to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives.. but they will NEVER TAKE OUR FREEDOM!!"... Here's the youtube clip of the speech.. brings me to tears everytime I see it www.youtube.com/watch?v=
tlf9ZLnrtiE&feature=PlayLi
st&p=82B7E0FBB70C4220&index=16

This bike and it's role in my journey to lose weight symbolizes my freedom... I do not want to be lying on my death bed years from now.. and look back on all the chances I had and wasted... on all the LIFE I had to live but chose a lesser life because I let my weight restrict me... take away my freedom. So? W. it is.

I wish I could tell you my ride today was inspiring... but it wasn't. It WAS intimidating and it was a wake up call to all I have to DO and LEARN. I rode 5 miles to my Zumba class. 2 1/2 miles there and 2 1/2 miles back. uhhhh it took me 30 minutes. Yeah.. that would be about 9mph average... uh huh.. not good. However, with no wind on the way I averaged 13mph... but on the way back I was straight into the wind and my speed at times dropped to 6mph!! SIX.. and I gotta tell ya that was not fun. I'm thinking okay.. this is 1/20th of what I've committed to do.. HOLY SMOKES...

But here's the deal.. everyone starts somewhere and this is where I'm starting... who knows where I'll end up! I am going to train like I BELIEVE I can do this... For the next 5 weeks I will build my weekly mileage... then on April 10th the "real" training begins. In the mean time, it's all about TITS baby TITS - Time In The Saddle. he he.. So, I'll train my hiney to not be so whiney!!

I believe I can do this.
I believe I can do this.
I believe I can do this.

This is my ONE CHANCE.. one chance to regain my freedom... my freedom of movement, freedom to fly without seat spillage, freedom to do a zip line tour in Colorado, freedom to kayak, freedom to ride roller coasters and just MOVE through life without restrictions. I would never ever allow someone to impose the restrictions to my freedom that I've imposed on myself by this weight. Never. I am SO done!

Battle On,
Annie

Wonderful blog, that bike is so meaningful for you and the symbolism you have found is inspiring. I just saw your status and wondering what is W. and now I know. I love it! My son's name is William and sometimes my husband calls him William Wallace, lol. As for the Century bike ride: You got this! Just keep riding! BTW I love the video :)

    Annie--

Five miles is a great first ride!

Keep in mind that most people don't ride their first century until the actual day of the century ride. My dh had topped out at 75 mile max before he did his first century. I had never ridden more than 45 miles in a day before I rode my personal best of 76 miles.

You went from 0 to 5 miles in one week! Even if you NEVER increase your weekly ride by that much again between now and 8/28/10, you can be ready for the century. If you add (on average) 3 miles a week to your ride, you'll be riding 75-80 miles in a day before the HNH century. And believe me, adding those 3 miles per week is a lot easier when the last week was 30 miles or 60 miles that it is when the last week was 0 miles or 5 miles. Doing a long ride is much more about finding the hours to commit to increasing TITS each week than finding the physical strength to go a couple of miles farther than you've gone before.

Think about tracking your weekly rides the same way you track your weight, calories, protein, carbs. Miles covered, time, mph, bananas eaten. As the length of rides goes up, you'll feel every bit as good about it as when the scale goes down, and grow more confident with each ride that

You CAN do it Anne. With one revolution of those wheels you are one `step` closer to obtaining your goal. YES YOU CAN! Just chant as you are struggling against that wind, say YES I CAN! I KNOW I CAN!

You are sooo inspiring to me! Love all your Scottish names!

We had the bikes out today but only daughter rode. Hubby and I were busy doing gardening work. But wasn't it lovely? Spring is coming!

You're so cute. You can do it. I'll remember that event date because it's my son's birthday. I have a pink beach cruiser, and I can't seem to get that bike any faster than 11 miles per hour. My uncle, who has done a lot of biking, last week told me very sarcastically that I can't get it any faster "because it's a beach cruiser... made for cruising on the beach". You got to start somewhere, and provided you're not on a cruiser, you'll probably get that speed up in no time.
