I have really had a hard time figuring out why people that don't exercise try to minimize the goals of people that have big goals. I wish I wouldn't give a rats a$$ about it, but it does bug me.

My goals for this year include:

A 5k race
An adventure race
Maybe an adventure camp
Climbing the Sears Tower stairs in the fall
Lose 15 lbs to get to my goal

I listen to some people at work demean this girl at our hospital that is climbing the Hancock Tower for Cancer. Saying "how crazy she is and how stupid that goal is". I spoke up for her and said "why is trying something new and seeing how far you can push yourself stupid?"

It boiled down to the fact that they could not do the task themselves and they were not wanting to admit this.

My philosophy is: If you don't try it, you will never know. Also, if you can't finish, it's OK, you tried to do the challenge and that is all that matters.

I guess I am going to have to learn to share my goals with people that have like goals. I also am going to have to learn not to let what other think slow my journey down.

I feel I only have one life to live and I better get living it while I have some of my younger years left.

Here are some of my goals for the future at some point:

White water rafting
Walking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon
Do an adventure race in a different area of the country
Hiking in the mountains

It is a good start on a list, I guess I could call it my "Bucket List" Love that movie!

    Challenging yourself, setting new goals, putting yourself first should be gifts to yourself and no one else...those that put you down are probably just jealous anyway!!! emoticon

    Terrific goals, JK! I like that you are staying focused on what YOU want to do, and not letting the opinion of others slow you down or stop you. There are some sabotaging people out there who just have to criticize others not matter what. It's truly a reflection of them and not you, but it's still hurtful nonetheless. I've learned to pick and choose who I say what to because of this very thing. And I feel better because of it; when I surround myself with supportive people who aren't trying to pressure me to doing it "their way" and who just genuinely are happy to see me succeed, that's rewarding. Everyone has different goals and different ways to reaching them, and SP is awesome about accepting people for who they are and where they are at, and that's one of the things I love most about this site. Keep striving towards your goals, JK, and you WILL get there, with a whole bunch of people cheering you on as you go!

    I agree with your feelings about other people shooting down goals. It reminded me of trying to help my sister lose wt. The final time I asked was when I asked if she wanted to go for a walk. She said, "No, we're going to Dairy Queen. Want to come along?" I told her no.

    Keep to your goals. Sounds fun. Esp. the Grand Canyon!

    Yay Jill, white water rafting is so much fun! I agree with you that people who diminish other people's goals are likely too afraid to try them out. The world is full of jealous people who don't want to see others succeed -- the rest of us celebrate each other's successes and are inspired by them!

    And people thought I was crazy for trying for a 5K at my weight, but I proved them all wrong and your friend will prove them wrong at her tower climb, and you will accomplish many amazing things in your life!

    I love your goals Jill - good for you to do things that you want to do and that challenge you. Definitely don't let what others think drag you down. Just get out there and start achieving those goals with enthusiasm! You can do it. What I love about SP is that even though we all can have very different goals, we can still encourage, motivate and help each other in meeting those goals and celebrate each other when those goals are met.

    I've always wanted to try white water rafting!!

    I agree there are so many people who don't understand why we want to challenge ourselves and try new things...and it's sad that they are content to not push themselves, they miss out on so much! We are blessed to have a cool site like Sparkpeople where we can meet and talk to other people who share this passion and spark others to do more than they ever dreamed. I would have never run a marathons (or half's!) or dared try a triathlon if it weren't for people I met here. So people can bring us down, and build us up...we just need to remember which ones to ignore :D

    Go get those goals this year girl! ;-)
