Home Remedies?

Sunday, February 28, 2010

I'm fighting a sore throat. Probably a sinus or allergy problem that causes my throat to get sore.

Drugs do weird things to me, so I try to stay away from them as much as possible. I'm usually a living, breathing, "Drug-Free Zone". LOL

But I do need SOMETHING to help my sore throat.
Usually I double up on my Vitamin C.
I take Airborne twice a day.
I drink green tea with honey and lemon.
I use Saline nasal spray.
I keep a cough drop or herbal lozenge in my mouth most of the time.

What else?

Do YOU have any home remedies that work for you when you feel a sore throat coming on?

Inquiring minds and sore throats want to know!

I hope your feeling better by the time your read my response. My doctor told me to boil water on the stove and breath it. I guess it is from the dry air and low humidity.

Do you have enough humidity in your house? I know I get sore throats when it gets dry. Try a warm mist to put humidity in the air.

Honey is very good for sore throat's and coughs. Also my Mom swears by vinegar for the throat (gargle with it). Onions also have antibiotic effects. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I do what you do except the Airborne. And sometimes like Martha, I gargle warm saltwater...dh's favorite. LIke you, I won't take most drugs...I don't trust any of them...what will they do to me in 10 years?
    Hope you are feeling better.

When I feel a cold coming on I put a dropper full of echinecea/goldenseal in water and drink it and take extra Vit C. Hope you are feeling better by the time you read this. Onward and Downward in 2010. PJ

the gargling with salt water is always good. My mom recently told me that mixing cinnamon with a tsp of honey helps her sinuses. I take echinacea when I feel something coming on and it often helps. I also take oscillococcinum (homeopahtic med) if I am feeling aching and found that to be really helpful. I too am very sensitive to prescription meds and take the minimum I can get by with.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Donna

Martha, I Googled pears and found this on the Food Channel:

Pears are known to have a cooling effect that is excellent in relieving fever. Some say the best way to bring a fever down quickly or sooth a sore throat is to drink a big glass of pear juice. The antioxidants will also build your immune system; so drink pear juice when you feel a cold coming on. One recommendation says that for vocal chord health, boil the juice of two Chinese pears with raw honey and drink it warm.

Need to get some pear juice! Thanks! Karen

I had a Chinese roommate in college who often said she needed "some pair for her throat".

I think of her often when I eat pears.

I always gargle with warm salt water, and tell my kids to do the same.
