Blogging and Eating Out

Sunday, February 21, 2010

It's been a few weeks since my last blog. I'm still not completely comfortable with blogging. Is it really that much more effective than just maintaining a daily journal? I've never been much of a journal writer to begin with. In the past, I would start a diary or journal and then forget about it after just a few days. And blogging is so PUBLIC! Do I really want my babbling out there for others to read?

I guess I can share this week that my husband is away for the weekend and I always find it so much easier to follow a diet plan when he's not around. If I'm not too hungry, I can prepare something simple for our two sons and eat something light myself. With him around, there's more pressure to prepare a family meal and then, once made, I may as well eat, right? Then there's the fact that it's a lot easier to say "why don't you get us something for dinner" when he's around. I'm too lazy to pile into the car to pick up lunch or dinner - I find it easier to just fix something at home. However, when he's home, I know he'll pick something up with little convincing and so I barely make an effort to put something together. And so we eat out. A lot.

Of course, I'm working on this! One of my goals is to prepare family dinners at home at least 5 times a week. My success has been hit and miss. Some weeks better than others. The key is in planning the meals and keeping the kitchen stocked with what I need. I have a growing collection of recipes to play with and fortunately my guys are not very picky eaters! I plan FABULOUS meals but just never seem to get around to do the grocery shopping for them. Or I buy what I need and things come up and we end up eating out and the food spoils!

So really? I have about as many excuses for NOT cooking at home as I do for NOT exercising. Time to tackle these two goals in earnest!

And apparently tell you all about it along the way...

I've never been much of a journal writer or blogger myself either but I'm working on it. At least when I type it out I don't feel like I'm talking to myself, lol. And even with this SP blog I can go days, and sometimes weeks, without writing anything. But it's nice to come back to and see where and how I've been.
I find mealtime to be a chore whether hubby is home or not. I have a hubby who eats tunahelper and hamburger helper with the occasional 'meal' (without veggies of any kind) thrown in and 3 kids with varying degrees of pickiness that makes it impossible to cook just one thing for everybody. I HATE it. I would love to cook healthy meals for the family but I'm the only one would eat it so I don't even bother. Most of our mealtimes are piecework...this food for that person, and quite frankly, I'm sick of it!
Good luck with the meal plans and preparation! I agree with whoever suggested the crock pot...it's wonderful to throw the stuff in in the morning and have dinner in the evening :)
And good luck with the blog thing :) It's actually quite therapeutic at times :)

I like to cook but feel like it is all the same things. My son, who is picky, wants some new items. So I have been searching the many cookbooks I have and also starting to use the crockpot more. That make be helpful to you. Get it started in the morning and let it go throughout the day. Some new items have been very easy to make and have been very good. Thankfully, my family will eat what I try. Hubby has always been very good about joining in without any trouble. But there are some things I'd like to try but figure he wouldn't like the combination of the ingredients.

But I agree with the picking up something for dinner. Sometimes that is the best idea and easy to do. It really takes a lot of work to cook but look for some that are new but less work.

I myself, have found it odd to blog as well. But I know I sit at a computer a lot, so its simple and easy and for me I can't accidently 'lose' the journal. Nor do I have to try and remember where I wrote numbers down and food items down while trying to decipher the cramped writing. LOL.

For myself, I find moral support helps a lot. Its a safe place to say things. As with all things, its up to you what you want to share or not=) we don't mind.

And I hear you, its hard when my boyfriend brings home krispy cream doughnuts as a 'surprise' when he KNoWS I am working hard to lose weight and feel better. 2 steps forward, 1 back, sometimes the days are just like that. As you said, WE CAN DO THIS!

I totally understand what you mean about journalling. I, too, am not a journal writer. I never had a diary as a teen. Well, I did have 2 diaries and each had a few days written in them. When we were in high school and I went to Israel, I wrote in it only on the airplane there. But it does allow us to remember our journey and try to keep us on track.

In regards to family meals, I am at times feeling left out of meals because I am following the spark meals and Doug doesn't seem to like many menus so he cooks for the kids and him and then will help me make my meal after they have all eaten. But if it keeps me healthier then so be it.

We can do this! Keep up the good work!
