Does unsweetened tea count as water intake?

Saturday, February 20, 2010

Yes dear Spark friends I have a question. If I brew tea and don't add sugar would a glass of my tea count as a glass of water? I have a streak goal of 10 glasses of water of day and I was just wondering.

I guess the same question would apply to my morning coffee. I so much appreciate your input on this question. Thank you all. And Hope your having a great weekend. emoticon emoticon

I've done extensive research on this as a health educator, and unless the tea is caffeine free, it does NOT count toward your water intake.

In fact, if the tea or coffee or any other beverage does indeed have caffeine, it actually detracts a cup of water from your intake. As caffeine is a diuretic, so you have to drink an extra 8oz of water for every 8oz of each caffeinated drink you consume.

I know this isn't what you want to hear (or read, for that matter), but unfortunately it's true.

Here's an article about this that you may be interested in reading:

Best wishes in getting in your daily water intake!

Yes. It most certainly does count. So enjoy your tea and track it too. LOL!!!

Thank you all for your replies. I appreciate it. The votes in I guess tea unsweetened counts as water. But I only do about a glass a day couple times a week. emoticon

I think it depends on how much caffeine is in the tea.

I count any flavored unsweetened water as part of my water intake. I get that info from the American Heart Association. Any fluid except soda, beer, or caffinated beverages count as water.

I actually count anything that is more than 90% water as a glass of water. I do add it as a food too if there are any added calories. So if you had 20 calories from a diet tea, it could be both water and a food. The important part is to keep it in moderation and work on drinking actual water too. I love those waters from the Whole Foods Market where you get a hint of flavor, but no artificial stuff and no sweeteners to up the calorie count.

I have heard both yes and no. Unfortunately it seems to depend on who you ask! I think if it is herbal tea that is darn close.

I'd like to think so, but I personally don't count it as such...
