Turtle News for Today

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

2010 has begun with my decision to get more active on Spark again, but not having much success with accomplishing that task. I have been seeing my cardiologist who is working with me to get the swelling in my legs and other parts of my body to go down to a healthy level. Also we have been working to get the blood sugar back to a healthy level and we are trying several methods to do that. After having blood tests done in January, he was pleased to tell me that my heart was functioning better, my lungs were clear....BUT my kidney function was deteriorating.

Making adjustments to the diuretics which help control the blood pressure and, hopefully the swelling, he suggested I try to find a way to get more movement. Walking has not been one of the strong points for me lately and the nasty weather has not helped either...in fact, I can find many things I'd rather do than walk...because it hurts. emoticon Playing on Facebook, doing my Spark things and generally sitting at my computer are much more satisfying to me. However, as we all know, that is probably not a great choice for someone who has legs that are swelling and look like they are Popeye's arms. emoticon I have been having much pain in my legs and now have an open sore on my right shin...,which is draining and the left leg is beginning to do the same. It feels like a very bad sunburn and makes it difficult to sleep and function well...can't stand to have it touched. emoticon

I saw my doctor yesterday and he says the kidney function is better and moving in the right direction...but the problem with my legs is due to the breakdown of my skin..,.the constant swelling has weakened the ability of the skin to serve it's purpose and the open wound will only get worse, if we don't do something to bring the swelling under control.

We also talked about my pain management and he has told me to try a different method...the Ibuprofen is causing bleeding in the upper part of the intestine and I am to speak with my PCP about another medication for pain.

This turtle is feeling very weary of trying to get things fixed, but since I'm not allowed to quit I will be bugging everyone more often.

  Hi Kathy emoticon emoticon

Life isn't easy as we get older. I'm experiencing leg problems also if I sit too long and even if I don't. I notice that it get worse if I don't get enough water. That sounds contradictory to retaining water but it actually helps me.

Because of problems with my feet, I'm having problems walking and am seriously thinking of starting a water aerobics class. It's a lot of good exercise but easy on the joints. I'm also thinking of getting one of those peddle machines that just has the peddles that you can sit in a chair and peddle your legs or set it on a table for your arms. At least that would not put a lot of pressure on my joints. I've got arthritis I believe.

My mom has problems with her legs and breaking out in soars. She has for years, 20 +, used pressure boots like they use in the hospitals. She uses them at home in a recliner instead of elevating. She also elevates but the boots are more comfortable. She does this 4 times a day for an hour each. It does seem to keep the soars away completely.

Your life seems very active with watching grandchildren. What a blessing they can be. I haven't had the privilege of being around mine much to build relationships.

God bless, Karen

    Hi sweet Turtle!
For someone who did all that walking to go to that sports bar you sure did a good job with swollen legs and all. Please be careful and take it easy.
Hugs and love you!
Debbie

    Kathy -
You know we are all here to support you and please do "bug" us. I also have some swelling issues in my feet but I have noticed that it occurs when I'm sitting at the computer for to long. Once the swelling sets in, even if I get up and move the swelling doesn't go down. In fact, it's very painful due to the "burning" sensation I feel. The way I get relieve is to elevate them for at least an hour. The key is to elevate them above your heart so I use lots of pillows. I have also reduced the time I spend on the computer. I make it a point now to walk around the house for about 10 minutes in between computer time. I do hope your doctor can help you solve this problem, but in the meantime, take baby steps and just try real hard to walk a little. Even if it's just one minute, 50 times a day, that's a good beginning. Love ya and you take care of yourself. Please keep in touch.

Kathy you know it is a struggle but all we can do is take it oen day at a time! I know about the legs issue-- I suffer too.. I too enjoy being at my computer but when I am sitting at the TV or in bed my legs are elevated--I have had skin eruptions many times-- if you apply a pressure bandage to it , it should heal better. WHen I do what I am supposed to with my meds and elevation, my legs feel better!.. I am always here if you need to talk!

    Hi, Dear Sister...
I know in the myriad books and newsletter I've accumulated and read over the years, I've seen something that talks about inflammation and how to reduce it. So I'm assigning myself the responsibility of following up on that . As you know sometimes the things I resonate with are not traditional medicine, but are the more complementary approaches, so I hope that I can find one that you can do and will find helpful...At least I'm going to try my best to hone in on this issue.

So, the body is pretty complex and an amazing creation, but it does require us to keep trying to tune it up...

Love you -- Hang in there...
Priscilla

Bug away. That is what we are here for. Sorry about those swelling legs. My prayers are with you. Exercise, do the other things that the doctors say to do and get well.
