Helmets are for MOTORcycles!

Saturday, February 13, 2010

Well, probably not....

My foot has been so painful that I've even had a cortisone shot. Not helping. I finally got a outside bike yesterday. Spring is so beautiful, I hate missing any of it.
Had a good first ride! Went about 4 times as far as a half hour walk. I will calculate it after I get done with this post.

I'm not a helmet NAZI or anything. I don't think that cycling is such a dangerous activity that it is reckless to go without a helmet and I don't think adults should be forced by law to wear them.

All that said, I've been cycling for over 40 years. I've been hit by cars 3 times and had a dozen or so crashes in competition when I was a young buck.

One of my worst crashes resulted in a horseshoe shape tear in my scalp that took 18 stitches to close. If I had a decent helmet I would have been laughing about the crash afterword but instead I was in an emergency room getting stitches and X-rays and a mandatory week of no cycling afterword (the worst part).

Modern bike helmets are so light and cool you forget you are wearing them. If you don't have one already pay a visit to your friendly local bike shop and they'll hook you up with one.

    Keep riding!

emoticon Good for you... my bike's still sitting in the garage, having only got one good ride in last year before flattening its tire! I had the tire fixed, but didn't get another ride in before other events prevented a good autumn riding season for me.

I have been thinking about Spring... only six to eight weeks away, Spring! emoticon

Yay Lori! Glad you said "well, probably not..." about the helmet thing. In my book, riders without helmets are organ donor wanna-be's. Go Lori!

Congratulations on getting a bike. I haven't ridden one in a long time. You mentioned your foot was sore. How did you injure your Foot? Very good blog.
