Still struggling with Strength Training...

Friday, February 12, 2010

I am still struggling with Strength Training for one of my team's goals. It's only to do 5 Strength Training exercises 3X per week and I am totally lacking.

However, another of the Team Goals is to have a Calorie Deficit daily and that I am excelling in! WooHoo me! I am back to 120.8 today!! After I post this blog, I am going to get on my treadmill and try for a minimum of 20 minutes! I can do it!!

Hugs y'all, stay warm and be happy!
Linda

**edit:
Thank you everybody! I don't know why I never thought of starting with one exercise and doing it throughout the day! One set here, one set there, and I would be doing ST!

I have done 36 minutes on the treadmill so far - I haven't been on it in weeks so today I try and the phone keeps ringing, lol, and even company to come by! But I am going to get on it again later!

Right now I am going to do some squats! Thanks to all suggesting fewer minutes and fewer exercises to start out with!

**edit:
today I did 3 upper body ST plus a 41 minute walk!

Wanted to share what has been working well for me -- I do one set (10-15, depending on the exercise) several times/day. Today I'm doing squats. Doesn't take long to do 10, but if I do them morning, afternoon, evening, I've gotten 30 in. Makes a nice break from sitting at my desk at work, too. Another day I'll do bicep curls, or crunches ... try to mix it up. The QuickFire Challenge team is great, too -- they'll give you a suggestion for each day. One of my teams (Colorado Christian Women) has a 5 minute Fitness Challenge where one person suggests a strength exercise, and next person to read it does that, then suggests the next one. You are fitting little bits in without ever feeling like you are "working out". Coach Nicole's 10 minute workouts (see The Spark) are great -- again, enough but not overwhelming! C'mon folks -- strength training is so very important! You Can Do This! emoticon

Your strength training goals are moire strict than mine ( surprise surprise!). I had spark pick mine for @ 15 min. 3 X a week. I swapped a couple with others because I did not like them, plus wanted to use some of the little bit of equipment I do have ( dumb bells, rubber stretchy thingy that I can never remember its name, and stability ball)

Glad to hear you have calorie deficit as a goal. I was just thinking of that this morning, as opposed to the goal of staying within calorie range. On some of these days when I jog/walk, etc. I just get hungrier and sometimes go over by a few calories, even though I still have SOME deficit, however small.

You are a winner, so I know you will figure out just what you want and need to do.

You can do it! SP generated strength training is the first I've ever tried that I can truly see a difference in my body. They give you so many levels, you can find one that is right for you. I definitely think it is worth it. With all your determination and history of success, if you are convinced you should do it, you will!

Congrats on the great weight! And you are a cardio machine!!

Great going on the calories and cardio. You're definitely gold medal material in those categories!

I struggle with strength training more than cardio because I still see it as a bit of a chore. I re-read an SP article on the benefits of strength training again today though and I think it might have given me some more focus.

I'm sure that you will have read it, but the link is at:

Hope you have a great weekend.
